I have shot my 40-50BN Shiloh 74 at steel targets to 800 yards and was not having any more trouble than the guys shooting 45-90s. I was shooting a 410 grain bullet and swiss powder. Make the cases from shortened 45-70 brass.

Keep on hav'n fun!

RE: Anniversary Rifle
I imagine you guys are shooting PP bullets in the .40-50?

RE: Anniversary Rifle
Would the 40-60 or the 4560 cases for the 76 Winchesters work for fireforming the 40-50 bn?

RE: Anniversary Rifle
if they are just shortened 45-70s yes they would.

pp for mr only and a 285 gn bullet.
it will shoot to 800 but I have to use the top of the short staff I have on mine,

what charge are you using with the 410 mike?
Dean Becker
only one gun but they are 74s

My best load is 49 grains of 1.5 Swiss with the 400+ grain PP bullet. With my 350 grain gg from Steve Brooks, 50 grains of 2Fg Swiss was supper, with an Sd of 5. Actually, that was the first and last load I made for that gg bullet, I then switched to shooting my 40-70SS PP bullets in the 40-50BN. With gg bullets, the neck should be turned to allow seating a bullet to use most of the neck length, otherwise the gg bullets only goes about 3/8" into the case before it hits the 'thick wall part'.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Hey Trapper, We haven't heard from you for a week or so. What's on your mind now? (I'll still vote for the .50/70 but that should be no surprise.) Shoot sharp, Mike

RE: Anniversary Rifle
Hi everyone, Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I haven't got back sooner, work is crazy right now.
I took a trip over to Big Timber yesterday so I could fondle the guns on the wall. Was I surprised when they are all in Vegas at the show. There still were a couple there to play with.
Best thing they had quite a few on the inventory rack. I went home with a saddle rifle with semi fancy wood, 30" heavy in 45-70.
My wife really fell in love with this one while we were there. I guess the next one will be a 50-70.
Thanks again everyone,
Trapper

Looks like a fine rifle. You guys are going to get a lot of good from it.

RE: Anniversary Rifle
Thanks Guys,
Ya, the next one is going to be a 50-70, already in the works. The wind is blowing 25mph and gusts up to 35mph here today. I was planning on shooting too. Might be a short trip to the range. Here are some better pictures.
