Trapper, Brass has been available for most of the Sharps cartridges lately but you must buy when you can. Right now my favorite sources for brass are out of both .50/70 and .50/90 but maybe you have a track on a good supply. I do see .50/70 brass offered on GunBroker. Even .45/70s are in short supply. All I'm saying is that you probably shouldn't base your selection of a chambering on the present or current availability of brass. Of course, if you order your rifle with the chambering of your choice, you will have some time to do shopping for ammo and accessories. Shoot sharp, Mike

Mike, I wouldn't let brass availability make my final decision, but it did cross my mind. My wife doesn't like to shoot as much as I do. She does hunt and is a really good shot with her rifles and pistols. I do a lot of shooting with my black guns to keep qualified for the Sheriff's dept. She comes to the range once in a while and shoots, but she don't care much for the black guns(except for my Colt officers model). She loves my Shiloh, but she is kind of afraid of it. The Shells are to big and the rifle weighs too much. I just haven't been able to get her interested in BPCR yet. I think since she paid for this rifle I am leaning towards the 45-70. She thinks I need a smaller gun and maybe get her interested in shooting it. Kind of checking into the 44-77 now thanks Don.

Lots of things to consider. A 44-77 business rifle with a shotgun butt might be just the ticket

Trapper, th funny thing about these guns is that, just as soon as you get one, you get the idea for another, in a different chambering. I think they'll all shoot well, regardless of what you pick.

If you want your wife to shoot it, you might even want something that recoils less than. .45-70. My most recent "last Shiloh" is a .40-65. It's not traditional, but it is the most accurate black powder rifle I've ever used, maybe not counting rifles that I shoot breech seated bullets in.

If I was going traditional, I'd go wih something a little more boring than Don's choice and get a #3 with an add-on pistol grip chambered in .40-70 SS.

can't go wrong, a ladies gun that is also a mans gun.
