I may give a #3 Sporter '74 Shiloh 19 twist 44-90 BN a whirl, shotgun butt, traditional fore end, 30" barrel, I'll see what I can get done as far as hunting with a 460 ish grain paper patch bullet, parallel sided with about a quarter inch flat meplat.

Finding brass and dies may be a real deal of a problem.

Thanks for the info,

Gunner
Dies can be had from CH4D. I bought my brass from BACO. Good luck with that .44 project.

Kurt, that's close to what I need, I will do some changes and get with Dave Manson and see what He thinks. Very glad to get a close copy of the print. Most of the ranges that I shoot at wouldn't give a Hoot what you shoot. Effingham this Friday thru Sunday, 22, 45-70 and 44 Maynard, each will get shot under the Baffles. HA HA

Will be happy in the 1300 fps range with the 477 grain 1.285" paper patch bullet in this new 44-77 build, I sure hope it kills like you guys say they do, it will be thoroughly tested this fall and winter.

RE: 44-77 44-90?
Well Gunner if you feel that 77 needs a Thor hammer you can always use a 2-5/8 reamer Smile
But that .44-77 will get the job done and don't worry about the high velocity. 1280 to 1325 is more than enough to get the job done.
I still have not recovered a single bullet even a angling shot that went through a lot of body mass and through the hind leg bone.
I looked at the scull the other day hanging on a pole that I put through the brain and if it wasn't for the raw hide holding the horn on the far side it would fall off. The shot behind the ear devastated the scull. That .44-77 will do what ever you want to do. Just forget the money type bullet with the 19 ROT. The original bullet profile that just about every manufacturer used in the mid to late 1800 rds will hit the mark past 1580 yards with out a problem.
My adjustable .44 mould is ready to be replaced. It has made contact with the concrete floor to often and it will be the same bullet profile.

RE: 44-77 44-90?
Kurt, Thank You, that's the kind of info I like to hear, and yes, 1300 will be plenty for me, don't have my calipers handy but, my paper patch bullet may have a .220" meplat, should do plenty well for hunting.

I wanted to keep the length at no more than 1.285" because of what the ODG's did and what I've heard from good members on this board, I will true the sights and send one on it's way very soon, hope there is another early doe opener in a neighboring state again this year, that will be an easy first test.

Sorry to hear about your mould collisions with the concrete, but glad to hear you have enough confidence in that design to order a new twin to it.

Gunner 75 grains of OE 2f, or 76 of 1 1/2 will likely be very good places to start and may be all the load development you need.. At least that's what my 2 shilohs have said.

RE: 44-77 44-90?
I found that the 3f OE was to fast to be of much use in anything other than making handgun cartridges stand up and pay attention. It will shake the screws loose on model P colts in short order.
Need to find some time to try the 1f OE in the 44, it works really well in the 40-90 bn so long as it's compressed a bit, other wise it fouls pretty heavy.
Bottleneck cartridges are a bit different animal than the johnny come lately straight wall cases, as that bottle neck forces the powder burn thru a smaller hole, thus increasing pressure, much like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose.
