Paper Patch question

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave I haven't played a lot with that bullet, although I recently cast up another batch in 20:1. I patched them to just under bore diameter with 8lb Seth Cole. I don't remember whether I was using 0.060" LDPE wads or a lube cookie between veg king wads as I'm not at home with my notes. The powder charge was 82gr of Goex FFg Express and it shot just over 1 moa high ( and a greater amount of horizontal though ) at 200m. The rifle is a CSA 1874 chambered with DanT's .45-70 paper patch reamer, and an MVA 6x scope.

I've got to play with this setup a bit more as I'm thinking of using it for scoped silhouette next year.

Chris.

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave using a std chamber is tougher, but you can get results. Get some thickwall RMC brass or a neck sizer that takes the end 1/4" down to hold your ppb. Leaving normal brass fireformed to your chamber and sizing the last 1/4" after loading the case is the best inline seating there is. I am not a big fan of ppb loads without a grease cookie, I use .2" 2 jojoba and 1 beeswax in my 45 2 7/8". 2 damp patches takes out 95+% and leaves me a consistant bore condition for retained accuracy the cookie keeps the fouling moist and manageable as well as sealing the gases off. The thickwall the way to go if you can swing their cost. bobw

RE: Paper Patch question
Hi Bob:

I understand the brass sizing situation------------its on the to order list---not a problem to "swing the cost"

I have some 4150 at 35 Rc in the hands of my lathe guy's for the neck sizers, first will be the neck size with the standard remington brass------and a bit more testing--------couple matches on the sillywett range should be fun, just for grins.

The cookie was 60% beeswax--30% tallow-10% lanolin-----a tad bit soft but didn't migrate so should ok------------that group was one damp patch bore mopped-----sure looked clean to me perhaps i'll experiment a bit with wiping technique and see if it closes things up a bit

next tests at 200 yards

Thanks for the feedback

Dave

RE: Paper Patch question
No problem Dave, spend $10 at the local health food store for a 4 oz bottle of jojoba oil and melt and mix it with 2 oz off beeswax and give it a try. Just my 2cts worth it does get any better for cookie lube. bobw

RE: Paper Patch question
Hi Bob:-----sorry for the delayed reply, been at my eldest daughters for a few days and quite busy. I have a new grandaughter as of yesterday !!!!!!!!!!!!----------been helping babysit the other 4.

I'll pick up some jojoba oil next time i get to town----------i have plenty of beeswax so mixing up a batch will be easy----this is the original Sharps lube if i remember correctly.

Thanks again

Dave

RE: Paper Patch question
Nope it's liquid, but it dries as a wax, just the way the spermicetti did.

RE: Paper Patch question
bruce, Don uses his on his patches. I use 2 parts jojoba oil mixed with 1 part yellowbeeswax by WEIGHT.put both in an old saucepan you don't use for cooking anymore and melt together at real LOW heat.Make a form or use a cookie mold to pour the melted mix into about .2" of an inch thick, after it starts to solidify put it into the refrigerator for a quicker solidification. I allways line my form with wax paper ,so I can wrap the cookie sheet and put it into a cigar box or similar cardboard one for storage. After you have charged your cases and installed your over powder wad with whatever compression you use you can turn the charged case over and use it as a cookie cutter on your lube wad sheet.I then put another card wad over the top of the lubewad and seat it snug and seat the bullet. bobw ???? ask away
