Paper Patch question

RE: Paper Patch question
Thanks again Dave. The bullet marker is a slick deal. I dry patch all my bullets by hand. It's how I was taught by my Dad and Orville. You are right, it's easy to line the seams up. Make sure your patch doesn't overlap at the seam. Seam to seam is the best, a hair under works as well.

RE: Paper Patch question
That's pretty much the same as I did, a groove for the bullet and a nose stop out of a piece of aluminum angle. I put my patch line on the ogive cause I don't allways get the patch strip the same width. bobw

RE: Paper Patch question
Hey Stephen, Rick, Bob-------------------

Stephen---i should get you parcel out by tomorrow UPS

Rick------very close to what i have been working on, when i get a minute to finish the bullet stop and the patch fence i'll post a picture-------------THANKS FOR THE PHOTO Smile

Bob------i have so far cut my patch strips about 1/8 wider than necessary and let the patch template trim three sides ----providing i get the template lined up properly-------again using a stop fence---all the patches should be exactly the same.

I really appreciate all the help gentlemen !!!

Dave

I made the template out of 5/16 tool steel so its thick enough to keep my fat fingers away from the knife blade and hardened so the king diesn't try to cut into the template--------so far so good

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave I took a cape chisel and put a couple marks on the bottom of my template so it doesn't move around when cutting the patches out. I also staple 5-6 sheets of paper together before cutting. You can cut a lot of patches that way.

RE: Paper Patch question
Hi Stephen-------------AHA "patch grippers" on the template great idea Smile betcha i can glue some sandpaper on my template and accomplish that "non slip grip" thanks for the tip !!

I stack the paper up also----------i clamp several sheets to my cutting board and use a steel rule to cut strips then i use the template to cut to shape--seems to do well and you can sure cut em up quick

Keep well and stay safe

RE: Paper Patch question
Well the silhouette match went well, no fliers screaming off into the trees and no dirt diggers skipping their way to the berms. All in all it was a great day, if a tad bit on the warm side 105 and 74% makes sweat bands a necessity.

Shot just below my average, the kibitzers were decorated with confetti from a 10 MPH head wind for most of the shoot and i didn't have to look far to analize the patch remainds---------which seemed quite uniform with only a postage stamp size piece of the first rap remaining.

So now refinement starts, charge weight first the perhaps some wad column and wiping technique variations------i shot the match with one wet patch drying the chamber with a patch near the base of the wiping rod.

Thanks to everyone for their help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Paper Patch question
That's interesting Dave. So you did the wiping in one pass? Brent Danielson had a post on bpcr.net a while back for his single pass technique. If I remember correctly he used custom bore pigs with some setup that allowed a dry patch at the same time ( for the full bore ). I want to come up with something like this as I'd sure like to use paper patched bullets for silhouette. With a single wiping pass there is plenty of time, but not so much for my current 2 damp + 1 dry.

RE: Paper Patch question
I had real good luck with a 40-65 and patched bullets wiping with one damp patch I was using a 425 gn bullet, wet the patch on my tongue and just pushed the patch through slowly , the rifle shot fine to 800 yds and held its accuracy very nicely,
