I'm sav'n my BD for 9mm & .40S&W.
BD is about the cleanest burning powder I have ever seen.

RE: Model P Colt
I like it because it gives good velocity and accuracy, yet isn't so wild with the pressures. Alliant had at one time quite a few different bludot loads on their web site for these good cartridges.

RE: Model P Colt
I know this thread hasn't been hit on for about two months but I'd sure like to see more about the good ol' Colt Single Actions here. Right now my favorite is a 5 /12" "Thumb-buster" in .44-40. My most used loading in it has 9 grains of Unique under the old standard #42798 (or #427098) bullet from a Lyman mold. I have both a '73 copy and an original '92 also in .44-40. Every now and then I load a batch of black powder loads to feed through Colt and the '73. Some doin's, for sure. Shoot sharp, Mike[/code]

RE: Model P Colt
I've been shooting a SAA made in 1907 for years. It is a 38-40 with a 5 1/2" barrel. My load is 7.5 grains Unique pushing 180 grains of lead. That produces just under 800 fps and consistently hits paper at 50'.

RE: Model P Colt
Winchester, Good doin's on that .38/40. I've had a couple of Colts from the pre-1910 era in .38/40 but they went 'down the trail' several years ago. One was a Bisley with a 4 3/4" barrel and I liked that gun quite a bit. But now I've tried to settle down with my .44/40s and I shoot the 9 grain load I mentioned earlier to try duplicating where factory ammo hits with my lever action. Shoot sharp, Mike

RE: Model P Colt
I have a bunch of 231 that was given to me. May give that a go in the 38wcf. Have used it some in the 45 colt, and the acp.

RE: Model P Colt
I've got too much Unique to try anything else. And it works so well I'm not in any hurry. Shoot sharp, Mike

RE: Model P Colt
Unique is my first choice with these large cases.
WW231/HP-38 is a very close, second choice.
Can't go wrong with either IMO.
Just make sure to use a firm roll crimp. I really like the Lee Factory Crimp Die for this.
