I know I'm starting to get a little wimpy after I let a few rounds fly with my new .45-2.6 Axtell

Isnt it funny how that works Kurt. I did the same thing because of something that was said on the shiloh forum. Didnt have a PP mould for it so got one coming from KAL very similiar to gunners.
Im gonna break down and put a recoil reducer in it tho. Finally did that to my shotgun this winter and made all the difference in the world.

I think that would be a good option to put one in. What kind are you thinking of?

Find the vibration null on your barrel and mark that spot with something that won't leave a mark. I use a rubber band that is tight. You can find the null by holding the rifle at it's balance point and slap the barrel with two fingers or a rubber mallet something that won't hurt the barrel. You don't need to hit it hard. You will feel a vibration in your hand holding the rifle. Tap the barrel front to back or the other way till you find the location where you don't feel a vibration when you tap the barrel, this is your null point and mark and measure this point for future reference.
This will eliminate some vertical. Horizontal can start with the guy behind the butt plate fat fingering the rifle, improper cheek weld, this also will effect the vertical. Seating depth of the bullet in the case can also cause horizontal strings as well as wind.
Uneven wood to barrel contact can throw verticals as well as oblique strings. I had bad vertical problems with one of my rifles so I bedded the whole forearm with acraglass and that solved that problem a whole bunch.
Free floating a falling block rifle is not an option.

Forgot an important point and that is holding the sight straight without canting it. A 10 degree cant will throw the shot from the X ring to the 9 depending the left or right hand twist in the direction it will travel at extended ranges.

WOW! Thanks for all that Kurt, I will put it to use asap, meanwhile a little update, 26 degrees outside, wheeled diesel fuel blast heater on casting porch, ambient temp bouncing off metal shop wall hitting me in the back is hotter than standing over the pot!Big Grin

55 beautiful bullets cast, didn't take long to cool, weighed 10 bullets, average weight 705.4 grains, heading in to patch, will be back.

Alright, cold morning chrono-ing complete with 705gr .494 bullets at 1.506 long, very happy to report rdnck's Black Magic lube provides a nice moist lube star on muzzle, even at 28 degrees, some may find that helpful for hunting season, was able to load and shot three rounds dirty with the OE 2F, used wiping stick to push fourth round back out of chamber, moist black gunk all over the patch, NO TEARS in it thoughSmile, Swiss 1F required blow tubing after each shot, hard stuff, but damn what a BOOM!

102grs OE 2F went 1291 fps
120grs Swiss 1F went 1281 fps

Loaded five each of the OE and Swiss with shorter lube cookie, then five more of each with the thicker lube cookie, have some homework to do, then math an MOA program with estimated b.c. of .65 to get hits at 400 and 500, after MOA's are figured and on steel, have five extra rounds loaded to get correct moa's, will re-paint and shoot for groups, nice 5 MPH with from the N/NE right now, shooting will be dew North.

Cant wait to find that 'null' point Kurt, as is I hold the rifle at end of forearm partially wrapping left hand around barrel with back of left hand on rest and rifle mounted to shoulder, standing and leaning over a tall bench, will be interesting to see what that difference will be when located.

Shooting buckhorn ladder barrel sights for hunting, and only out to 500 yards thus far, I've never had any problems with vertical, have damn sure had some horizontal in these Oklahoma hurricane winds though ; ]

Kurt, I knew full well you were going to save me some work, shooting done, with one extra sighter left over, 400 yard five shot group with 102gr OE 2F with fat grease cookie measured 2x3-3/4 inches best I could measure bullet center to center, 500 yard five shot group with 120gr Swiss 1F with smaller cookie went 5x6.5 inches.

I used a blow tube between all shots to make it as consistent as I could, at the conclusion of each five rounds, I pushed a dry patch through the bore, turned it over and pushed through again, then fired the next five, went up and took pictures, to say I'm happy is an understatement!

BTW, used 114 moa of an available 370 to get to 500 yards, seems these 50-90's do indeed have some reach, wind had switched to out of the N/NW at 6 mph and variable during shooting.

Gunner I'm glad it worked out for you. Now I can sleep tonight Smile
Look at it this way. That is 5 dead Bisons at 500 yards Smile

LOL! well I'm certainly glad You're going to get some sleep tonight Kurt, I didn't figure this would take long if I'd only listen to You and Bill, i'll text Stephen and see if he has time to post us up some pics tonight.Smile

BTW, will a Creedmoor nosed 705gr paper patch bullet at 16 to 1 alloy kill a buffalo?

RE: 50-90 paper?
You bet it will. It will pass right through and ventilate the boiler room and you will be able to eat right to the bullet hole.
