Full length scope

I have been searching all weekend trying to get opinions on a full length scope for hunting. With not much luck. My eye sight is going and have a hard time seeing the front sight. I have a saddle rifle with a 30" barrel. I was just wondering how well a full length scope works for hunting? low light conditions?

It adds a lot of weight to the rifle, and they don't transmit light as well as the shorter scopes. Would probably be better off to go with the MVA B5 for a hunting scope.

I have read that a couple different places. I just wanted a full length scope. I really didn't want to drill my barrel. I just thought I could use dovetails that are already there. I guess I was mostly wondering how much light transfer there is in a full length scope? Is it adequate for hunting?

These scopes don't transmit light like the modern one's we're used to. Dick Savage used a full length scope on one of his guns on an elk hunt.
Guess you could always get the scope and if it doesn't suit your needs sell it, they hold their value pretty good.

When your sitting in a ground blind or still hunting when you only walk a few yards at a time and paus for a spell and have a tree to lean on a full length scope would be workable. I have a short DZ and a 28" MVA scope and I have looked through the full length scopes and they would all work just fine during heavy overcast days early and late. They are just a bear to drag around.
The other thing I don't like with a full length scope and that is the lube blow back smearing up the lens.

That is the kind of info I am looking for. I think I will call MVA tomorrow and order one up.
Is it hard to beat the original sights out and install the mounts? I am kind of like a bull in a china shop. I would really hate to screw up my new Shiloh. Maybe I could get Shiloh to install.

I have a couple friends that use the full scope. One used it on a couple Buff hunts with me and it did a fine job for him. But Shooting it on a windy day he had to clean the lens several times because the lube fouling blew back.

If you hunt in any brush at all, it's a pain in the backside. Hunted with one for several years. Also, a scope makes cocking the hammer harder as it sits to close. If it's cold and you have gloves on, really bad. I finally made a hammer with an off set ear.

Trapper I might add........The full length scope is a plus when you use a high block for the rear mount shooting long range. You don't get the barrel shadow or look through the front sight globe like you see with the 28" or the Short DZ or B5 My short DZ scope is just about useless past 1000 yards because of the barrel shadow unless I use high front and rear blocks to clear the muzzle shadow.
