Die
does anyone know where I can get a die that makes the primer pocket from large rifle into large pistol? I was thinking Kermit Hoke made one but I can't get ahold of him.

RE: Die
Hiwall55, why not just use a under primer card/wad. I use a .004 or .005 card stock under the primer and it works out fine. Fill the shorter length and mutes the primer flash well. Easy-peasy!

I would use a little caution putting wads under primers in the primer pocket. What you see here are gas cuts in the face of the breach block that happen putting wads under the primer in the pocket. Also the shell cases have cuts in the pocket walls.

RE: Die
Kurt, I have not seen any evidence of that with my rifles or loads.....but I only use Federal Large Pistol primers and the are just a smidge larger in diameter and don't seem to set back or gas cut. But I'll take note and pay attention.

RE: Die
Would love to see how that die works.
The only difference between the 2 primers is in the height.

RE: Die
I have a Fred Cornell die that swages flash holes from .080 down to .060 but cant say I have seen any improvement.
On pistol primers I punch through a strip of .008 art paper with my rcbs bench primer and come back on a second trip to seat primers. I see improvement on the chronograph but may or may not on my target.

RE: Die
If I was to change my primer pockets for accuracy I would call RMC and have them make enough cases for a match with small pistol primer pockets.

Somewhere I might still have some .308 Norma brass that have small rifle primer pockets that I used for match and they did improve the accuracy.

I also soldered the flash hole in some of the .50 cases and drilled flash holes like a Berdan primer to see if made a difference, but the boxer primers developed to much pressure and got some blowback using them but they did shrink the groups but where not worth the effort making the conversion.

It's funny how we go through so many different ways to get the best from these rifles. 30 years ago we used magnum primers. Enlarged the flash holes. Now we put paper under the powder and over the primers. Swage flash holes.
Is all of this necessary????
