RE: Gussy's Buff Video
Mighty fine, indeed. Created the best tracking job of all, 2 feet straight down. OUTSTANDING!

Gussy--I meant to ask. Did you shoot through and through the animal? If so, about how big was the exit wound? Thanks. Shoot straight, rdnck.

It was straight through dead center on the spine. I did not actually check the exit after he was skinned but on the ground it did not look real big. The skin pulls back some after the exit and looking at the bone, the bullet had to have opened up a LOT.

We went back out there the next day with metal detectors and tried to find the bullet just o seee it!! The grass was just to high and thick. I told Rick he needed to go out with the lawn mower so we'd have a better chance Rolleyes

OK, thanks. That's sort of what I expected. The exit hole is not usually a great deal larger than the entrance hole. That was dead nuts perfect bullet placement. Shoot straight, rdnck.

RE: Gussy's Buff Video
Gussy, your shot was a little like the last buck I shot here in PA with my Marlin 45-70. I held the rifle just a tad too long and the front sight was starting to bounce up and down some. When he took one more stop out I pulled the trigger as the sight was coming up and hit him in the spine just above the shoulder blade. I have never seen anything fall that fast in my life. Now this was back before I had seen the light and moved over to the dark side. That rifle seems to like a 300 gr hollow point over a modest charge of smokeless. Even tho it was a jacketed hollow point, all the damage was contained to an area about the size of a tennis ball. I would guess that there was very little to almost no meat loss do to bullet placement.
You really gota love those big ole fat slow moving slugs. They just get the job done and keep on trucking. And they only kill in the end that is important.

I fired 2 foulers early in the morning and then we went out. It was nearly 3 hours later when we finally got a clear shot on a young bull. I did hurry the shot slightly as I was worried about him mixing back in and got too much front sight up, which caused the high hit. On the good side, nearly no meat lost!!

Same 45-90 I used last year with the same open sights. The same load too, Old E powder, 90 gr. with a 30-1 Government bullet out of a Lyman mold.
I had a scope on it here at home but finally decided I could see better with the copper front sight and open rear. The scope is back on and I will use it for elk next week and maybe deer tomorrow! The scope picture wasn't as good on the black Buff hide as it will be on deer or elk and I have to have positive ID on the horn size to shoot either.

The meats in the freezer and steaks are on tonight with a glass of wine!!
Hey Gussy, Please let me be a pest. Which grade of Olde Eynsford did you use? Also, the "Government" bullet I'm guessing is the 500 grain #457125. Is that right? I must ask because the 400 (advertised as 385) grain #457124 is also a Government bullet. We want to know the truth, you know. Good doin's again, and Shoot sharp, Mike
