Since I was 13 YO (65 years ago) I have belonged to everyone of those groups, somewhere along the way. There's not a bad one in the bunch. It's too bad only rifle cartridges were mentioned,

I'm with you Jim except for the .223. I favor the .222 and my Elk rifle was the .35 Whelen

The only group I'd fit into, considering their definitions, is the .45/70. Of course, if they had a .250/3000 group I'd be a master advisor and a .30/30 group should be included too. However, I did enjoy reading their suggested characteristics of those group members.

Hello Kurt and friends, The one Cavite I'd have to place on a caliber or rifle is "when". When I was youngster and followed the traditional NRA high Power rifle path it started with 30-06 (03-A3- M1 & .223 bolt ) and then on to HP belly shooting with .308 for Palma and lastly 6.5X284 for "F" class. Hunting wise for Deer and critters I went forth with .58 caliber in Black powder season and 30-06 during smokeless seasons. I have had great fortune to travel West and with trusty .338 Mag harvested 4 head of Elk over the years (sadly not enough attempts) which is better than most citified Eastern bound (Ohio) two legged Predators. Now in autumn of my adventures I guess the errors in some way are being corrected as three rifles in 45-70 are my mainstays. Now my dilemma is how to prep and cook them Steel critters laid low. Aside if I may, this morning I happened to serve as Range officer for local winter HP rifle league (49 competitors). What is unique to report is that there was not one bolt actioned, wood stocked rifle being used. The last hold out was myself during last season and I retired to admin matches this year. Best RB

I don't see to many wood stocks on the range anymore either. Last week I signed up for a indoor .22 rifle league and when I opened my rifle case I had a guy ask me what kind of rifle is that? It was my CPA 44-1/2.

I've only missed the .375 H&H, all the others are in the safe or have been. Boy that's a sad statement...Steve

Steve, times are a changing. Many folks these days enjoy the smaller knat-smacker calibers. Its the trend , and it changes as time goes by. The old .375 H&H has been a big-game caliber for eons it seams, although I know of a gent that has used it in a p'dog town a few months back !

Being "gun nuts", we all surround ourselves with our favorites, many times over a wide variation of rifles, and handguns too!

I won lots of 'junk' shooting the NM M1 with the Army Team and after I became a Distinguished Rifleman with the Service Rifle I changed over to the NRA Match Rifle Category and my caliber was .308 Winchester. This was before everyone swapped over to the 'Rat Gun' which I utterly hate and I reckon since I cut my teeth on a 1903 A3 at age 10 I could be put in the class of 30 calibers! And if I had to pick just one.....it would be the '06! It's damn hard to beat that Ole War Horse IMO!! Many of the younger generation feel like they need a cartridge case akin to my thermos jug and a scope with an objective lens as big around as a syrup bucket! They don't have a clue! I'm definitely OLD SCHOOL at 75!!
