RE: .38-50 Hepburn
I wish both of you well! Smiles from shooting a BPCR are a good thing, May they continue!
A full report with pictures is expected next week! Good luck!

Ian
If you ever would like to try this bullet your more than welcome to borrow this mould to cast a bunch.
The bullet is a fine shooter in my rifle but with the long freebore it has I have to breach seat it or it get wild.
The base is at groove diameter when patched and it holds in the case snug with out having to size the neck.

It's good you two enjoy doing this. Hold tight and have fun.

Thanks!! I may eventually. For now we will try this one. I do have some shorter DD bullets that will fit her rifle that I may try later. I was at the loading bench lastnight wet patching bullets for her and the .362 bullets are very tight with the Seth cole 55w. They will chamber but you can see the rifling marks in the paper once the projectile is pulled out. The Seth cole 55Y makes for a much better fit. I have 100 wet patched with the 55w. Tonight I think I will load 50 with the 55y and dry patch them. I’ll take some patches to the shoot with me and I can re patch the 100 wet patches with 55y if I need to. Jim I will try to upload pictures but very few of the pics that I try to upload actually make it. Either way there will be a full report.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
My .38-50 chamber is tight. I patch my DD bullet at .376" at the base and .366" on the shank. They are a snug fit in a fired case when loading them and if I just slightly deform the case mouth while seating the wad and compressing the powder that case will not chamber with out a very hard push with the thumb or I use a pusher that Arnie gave me.
I found annealing the necks for the fire forming process and for the second forming shot a tight wad thumb pushed in the case expands the case mouth slightly enough that the case without a bullet is a very hard push into the chamber the last 1/4".
I ended up cutting a .30-40 Krag Lee full length sizing die down just below the shoulder and taking two thousands off at a time till I had a proper fit I wanted just so when seating the bullet in the case it would have a slight resistance when spinning the bullet in the case mouth. This makes a very good neck sizing die.
This has been a fun caliber and still is.
I just need to get to a long range for a match or just have a place to shoot past 200 yards to fine tune this rifle.
Raining here again today and it's very cool might have to turn the heat on again.
I hope it passes by before the weekend so these matches in Wis are on.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
We have a long range match 2nd weekend in June and she is going to shoot it. I have not decided if I will go for my 38 or my 45 but your right , this little cartridge is a ton of fun. I’m excited to start shooting Friday.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
Where is that match Ian?
The Doc told me not to shoot anything larger than the .22 for a spell till the back heals but it goes in one ear and out the other this little .38 I hardly feel when it goes off.

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
My wife’s first match didn’t go how she had hoped. She is very much against the wiping required for paper patch. So we have decided that she would be better suited with a grease groove bullet. BACO has a 365 grain Creedmoor bullet that is 1.4” long. I am thinkIng about ordering that with 2 reduced bands so that we can seat it out a little farther and use a little more powder with it. I will see if they can cut the reduced bands at either .367 which is her bore diameter or maybe .368. What are your thoughts ?
