Stephen, thank you. My bullet runs a little heavier at 490 grains, but it has shot very well out to 200 yards on paper and 400 yards on gongs. My .50-70 is a C. Sharps 1874, I had it built many years ago as a hunting rifle. I believe the .50-70 to be an excellent hunting round.

I'll give that a try and see how it goes. This something I have wanted to do for years and just never get there.

Another question for you if I may. What do you find to be best for your front sight blade, shape and size?

   

Jim all of my hunting Sharps rifles have a Hartford front sight that I made. It’s .085 tall and .062 wide. I use a semi buckhorn rear sight. With the sight filed to this height I’m right on at all yardages with a 6 o’clock hold. What twist does your 50-70 have? It’s a very nice rifle.

It's a 30" Badger barrel with a 1-26 twist. It has a .350" long x .5105" diameter freebore. This has worked out very well with bullets patched to .510" diameter. I've tried ppb from 600 grains to this latest one at 490 grains. I like this new one best so far. The heavier bullets were just an attempt to see how far this little cartridge could be stretched. I don't see any advantage in the longer, heavier bullets with my eyes and the sights on my rifle. It has a Beech combination front sight, a semi-buckhorn barrel sight and a reproduction Sharps sporting tang sight. I haven't filed the blade yet which is why I was asking about how yours are configured. Right now it's higher than the pinhead on the flipside.

It's hard for me to believe it but I've had this rifle for 24 years! It has always been a great shooting rifle. It really shines with groove diameter paper patch bullets from 490 grains to about 520 grains.

Is the sight .085 tall from the base or the barrel flat?

Caprock it’s from the top flat of the sight. The post itself itself is. 085 tall.

Stephen I like reading your posts with the Boys. It brings back a lot of memories doing this with mine.
The first hunt I took him where I let him carry a .410 single shot Stevens on a bird hunt and Mike my Lab flushed a Pheasant and my Son just stud there with his mouth wide open and I said, are you just going too let him fly away he raised the gun and shot when the Pheasant was way out of range and landing. He yelled out I got him Dad! LOL.
