Big 50 - Stephen Borud - 11-02-2019 [attachment=1548][attachment=1549[attachment=1550] A 257 yard shot brought this doe down with my Shiloh Big 50 and a 473 Grain paper patch bullet. The snow was coming down, wind was out of the North and the temp was 12 degrees. A perfect hunt to share with one of my sons. He got to experience deep snow, crossing a creek 8 times, cold feet and fingers. At one point on the walk out he said are we going to make it Dad? I said, not a problem son! He will remember this hunt for the rest of his life. RE: Big 50 - Gunner500 - 11-02-2019 That's a hell of a hunt, Good on You and the young Man Stephen, well done Sir. RE: Big 50 - Stephen Borud - 11-02-2019 Thank you sir! SB RE: Big 50 - Don McDowell - 11-02-2019 Thanks for sharing the hunt with us.. RE: Big 50 - Stephen Borud - 11-02-2019 You are welcome Don. I screwed the pics some how! I’ll try and post a few more that are a little bigger. Thanks for having this forum for us to share our experiences. RE: Big 50 - Don McDowell - 11-02-2019 It's my pleasure. RE: Big 50 - Distant Thunder - 11-03-2019 Stephen, The memories I have of hunting with my father and the ones I am still making of hunting with son are the best. And you are correct, he will have that memory the rest of his life, but you will have it for the rest of yours too. I for one would like as much detail about your load and bullet as you'd care to share. Thank you. RE: Big 50 - Stephen Borud - 11-03-2019 Thank You Jim. I use 100 grains of Fg powder, a 473 grain paper patch bullet 1.060 long, bullet OD is .494, patches up to .501 with 9 pound paper. I use .023 Circle Fly Cards and 3/16 of lube between the cards. For hunting I like my bullet seated .250 in the case. This rifle has a Orville Loomer PP chamber and a 1/36 twist. RE: Big 50 - Distant Thunder - 11-03-2019 Now that I am going to have some time I'd really like to get back to my .50-70 and develop a good hunting load to use with the paper patch bullet I made some time ago. Your load is about how I thought if would be, with the lube wad between 2 cards. Being that I am a target shooter using paper patch bullets I haven't been making much lube the past several years, but I wouldn't need much for hunting loads. I'm wondering what kind of lube works best in hunting loads so to allow accurate follow up shots without wiping? RE: Big 50 - Stephen Borud - 11-03-2019 Jim I use 1/3 Jojoba oil to 2/3 bees wax by weight. I make the lube 3/16 thick. I have a 50/70 Shiloh as well. It shoots the 473 and a 425 Grain bullet very well. Both bullets have killed deer. I use the same lube and card set up for both of my 50s. Thanks Stephen |
