Scope mounting
Here’s a question for you guys who know about these things.
My Highwall has a dovetail cut 7 1/4” ahead of the rear sight dovetail.
I could use cross dovetail bases and mount a scope without additional drilling and tapping. But the rear dovetail is 5” ahead of the receiver. Is this too far for the eye relief with Unertal type scopes?

RE: Scope mounting
If it is factory drilled and tapped for scope modern scope mounts you can get a base from Steve Earl that uses those holes

RE: Scope mounting
Don,
No, it an original rifle. 1886 by the serial number. It’s had a dovetail cut in the top flat 7 1/4” in front of the rear sight dovetail. This as I understand it, is about the proper spacing for scope mounting. MVA makes scope bases on cross dovetails that would work. My question is, would it be too far forward for proper eye relief?

RE: Scope mounting
It would be too far forward for a DZ Arms scope.
A longer scope might work.

RE: Scope mounting
You could put an MVA scope with the dovetail mounts on it but you would probably have to use a 23 inch or longer scope
Best bet would be to call MVA with the measurements between holes and the dovetail and the size of the dovetail cut and barrel length
Leatherwood used a similar set up for the 22 lowall with their 18 inch scope

RE: Scope mounting
I "eyeballed" those dovetail locations- rear sight dovetail plus the one 7.25" towards the muzzle
on my 32-40 hi wall that now has the usual location of bases 1.5 inches in front of receiver ring
and second, 7.2" forward for my Lyman STS or Unertls.
Those locations at and forward of the barrel sight dovetail, just will not work unless a person were to add a rail
that stretches back to the receiver and then install bases in more usual locations.

Other option is to have the barrel drilled and tapped at "correct" locations for scope bases. In my opinion this is the best option.

RE: Scope mounting
I mounted a rail on my low wall but for a modern scope but you can also get a dove tail rail for the Unertl scope using the existing holes or dove tail cuts.
It's an EZ change back to the original configuration.
