Sifting Powder

How many of you sift your powder and what benefits have you experienced as a result.? I sifted 3/4 of a pound today and experienced quite a bit of loss but if the results of the sifting show improvement at long range I shall continue to do it..

So what has your experience shown?

In my opinion, if you compress your loads, you're wasting your time and powder by sifting. Crunching up the powder kernels by compressing is the same as leaving the smaller grains and dust.

No I don't sift powder. I was taught how to load about 30 years ago by some top notch shooters at the time and they told me the same thing I told you. Now if you have different lot # of powder (same make) same F size, you can pour all of them in a glass container and blend them together for a more consistent powder. What are you shooting using 1 F Goex?

Well I'm not a 'sifter' ...and the cost and erratic availability of powder down here
means we arent looking for ways to not use what we do have. I've seen some impressive sifting set ups on the net in the last few years but it just never struck me as the way forward ..certainly at the average shooters level. I've known a few that rotate canisters, especially after mixing, to ensure an even blend. It only makes sense after all but have I seen any difference down range ? Not in my limited experience. If the lots are the same I've found that consistent load level/height within the case along with corresponding similar seating depth and tension of the projectile to be pretty
good areas to concentrate on. ...Also 'not flinching' seems to help me even more.

Yes I am shooting 1F Goex. I like the idea of mixing lots to blend the powder.

I have a 45-90 ordered and will scope it with an MVA 4000. Then I will be better equipped to truly test out sifting with open sights and old eyes I can never be sure if it is the load of me. lol...

I remember doing it when I started out with Goex. but never tested the difference.
I pour my powder in a margarine dish to scoop onto the scale. When I got done tonight I poured it back in the bottle. There was some fine powder in the bottom of the dish so I just pitched it. That was OE.

Run over to Redrocks in Miles City and pick up a couple of cans of Olde Eynsford 2f. That will help with the problems you're having with the Goex 1f and certainly eliminate any need to sift powder.

Don, I would but I have so much Goex economics dictate I find a way to make it work. Of course by the time I find a way I may have used it up.. lol..
