Just another mould..or two.

RE: Just another mould..or two.
Kurt,

I have a drawing of your Sage bullet on file, thank you. It is a very fine shooting bullet and I may have to have one made some day.

I was never a fan of adjustable molds until this .44-77 came along. I have it figured to make a set of spacers to put under the base plug of this Brooks mold that will allow me to repeat the lengths that I want to use. That should make repeatability an easy matter. I hate fiddling around trying to get the length just right!

I have several bullets saved and if I want to go back to one I just put it in the cavity, close the mould and adjust the stem till it makes contact with the base.

It's a nasty day here today, 36º fog and raining sitting here reading these mould posts got me thinking. Big Grin

Instead of making mould blocks and getting them square and cutting vent lines and getting the cavity cut center. Why not make swage dies......I have several 1" cold rolled bar stock 8' long in the shed and I have two swage presses from both Corbins, why not make swage dies. This can be done on the lathe or mill with fairly easy to make tooling from scrape number drill bits or reshaping a boring bar.......Hmmmmm........I have a precision tool post grinder........lapping compounds.........I think I have a winter pastime taking shape......... Big Grin

We are getting snow today and lots of it, several inches so far and it still coming down. It will take a couple days to clear this out and get back to important things. The bad news is that it will shut my shooting range down a week or more until I can get to making a path out to the 200 yards target, not an easy task with this much snow all at once.

Just came in from shoveling a path out to my shop. Guess I have to break down and put the plow on tomorrow.

Don, that Desert International Match is sounding pretty good right now!

Jim. We’ve had high wind all day. Just starting to die down now. Can’t tell how much snow we got because of the drifting.

Kurt. Can you make a 16:1 bullet with a swage die or do you need soft lead for that? Back in my HP days I used to get jacketed 30 cal bullets form a guy over in Minnesota. He made them with a Corbin set up. He cast the cores I believe. They shot well enough out to 300. Besides myself, I had two boys shooting. We went through lots of bullets!

Jim,

We haven't had much for wind all day. When I came in from clearing snow about 2 hours ago we had about 8" and it was still coming down but was starting to let up some. I'll wait until daylight in the morning to get back at clearing snow. I should have it cleaned up by noon. I have no idea what the roads are like but they'll have them cleaned up by morning.

JKR it’s nice to get down there out of the snow it’ll be about 50 degrees in the morning all the locals have their carharts and lite goose downs on and those of us from normal country running around in shirt sleeves wondering if we should run down town and get some lighter shirts ?

Don,

The wife and I are talking about it. Nothing like the first snowstorm to get us thinking about going south!

We drove down three years ago for the Desert Midwinter Match at Phoenix Rod and gun. ( Bullseye Pistol) I shot HP matches at Ben Avery a few times back in the 90’s. Like you say, nice break from the cold and snow!

400 rounds though! I don’t have that much brass!
