Lube Recipes using Mutton Tallow
I've got a bunch of tallow and considering a variation of Emmerts for pan lubing and for cookies. It gets damn hot here but not as dry as the high plains.
40 % beeswax
40 % mutton tallow instead of crisco
10 % olive oil and maybe jojoba. Also maybe 5 % olive and 5 lanolin.
Anyone have any other favorites using this sheep dip stuff?:

RE: Lube Recipes using Mutton Tallow
If you have a tallow and not a lot of fried out fat which is a lard but some people call tallow then use it straight.
I havent rendered any tallow for some time and I'm out, but when I have some good hard dry tallow rendered out I make 3/16" thick
tallow slabs and I use it right straight on top of the powder with out a card wad and a thin poster board card under the bullet.

Tallow makes a good lube by itself. You can add beeswax, but you have to be careful as a little beeswax goes a long way, and it is easy to make the lube too stiff. Shoot straight, rdnck.

RE: Lube Recipes using Mutton Tallow
Tallow by it's self does make a good lube like Bill said, but not for a GG bullet. The lube will not hold well in the grooves and it is to hard for pan lubing unless you use a cutter and then you have to load it because the lube dont stick in the grooves to well.
Using it for a pan lubed GG just a little oil added will make it flex and stick in the grooves better.
Straight 3/16" or 1/4" tallow lube wads like I use right on the powder will not degrade the powder even with the loads sitting in a hot truck on a hot day and it works very good for a lube but looking down the bore after shooting the bore will be a lot darker from fouling that stays behind that gets stuck to the lube that is left behind from the hot flame that is right in contact by sitting on the powder and I think most if not all the lube wad gets used because I have never found one on the ground like a lube wad sandwiched between two cards. But the fouling that is left behind is soft.
A card is needed under the bullet if the patch is not twisted and tucked into the base cup. If you patch with the twisted tail tucked in the cup you dont even need a wad under the PP bullet with this lube wad if the bullet cast soft. Hard cast you need a good wad under the bullet of you will get possible gas cuts.

RE: Lube Recipes using Mutton Tallow
here is a recipe that proved successful.
75 gm ozokerite
75 gm tallow
62 gm copha
150 ml caster oil
12 gm vaseline.
this lube had the least leading in a certain barrel of any lubes by a long chalk.
the piece of paper with the recipe on sits on top of the lube and has some oil staining, so there is either too much caster, or another oil might be better.
ozokerite seems to carry more ingredients than beeswax.
old charly dell woild probably roll over in his grave at using vaseline in a bpcr lube, but it worked.
if ever i start making lube again, this is where i will start.
keep safe,
bruce moulds.

By the way! 50/50 OZ and Vaseline makes a good lube wad too.

RE: Lube Recipes using Mutton Tallow
kurt,
it was you who raised the ugly head of the elusive ozokerite some years ago.
i used to make a lube for 58 cal minies with 50% beeswax and 50% tallow which worked ok.
one of ned roberts books lists recommended lubes by the great single shot rifle makers, and at least one of them recommended tallow on its own.
if i could get whale oil, i would be happy with whale oil, tallow and beeswax.
whale oil has a completely different feel than any other oil i have felt. almost greasy, and very sticky.
dexron was developed to replace whale oil, and i would try dx 1, as that could be closer to whale oil, being the first one.
keep safe,
bruce.

Bruce
Get some Jojoba oil and mix that dirt wax 2 parts oil to 1 part wax.
I havent had any Sperm oil for about 10 years now. When the local War surplus store carried it I got the last of the green 1 gallon cans and it is long gone. But Jojoba oil I think is better then DX-1. It's a lot cheaper then the Jojoba.
