To my way of thinking it's imperative if one is working with a double cavity mould to have both cavities as near the same as possible! With this confounded mould it's delivering two different balls because of the oblong/elongated entry holes and if the holes are drilled larger the sprue on the ball is therefore larger! The sprue left on the mould should be as small as possible!Idea

Thanks for the tip on NEI!

Your welcome Rick. Since I am retired I have the time to set and do a little research and I am fairly good at finding things, especially things from company's I have done business with in the past. I would think that there are enough .54 cal rifles out there that the proper mold shouldn't be that hard to find but I have been known to be wrong from time to time.
Good luck.

Rick.

I take my cast round balls, about 100 or so, and put them in the tumbler and cover them with water, about 1/2 full drum and tumblem them for about a one hour. They look like a swaged round ball when I pull them out.

RE: Take a gander.....
Kurt, thats a very interesting way of gettign rid of the sprue on round balls. Many years ago I remember reading that the way to get rid of the sprue was to roll a hand full of balls between 2 sheets of glass. This way sounds a lot easier and probably does as good if not better job of it.
