40-70ss recipes

The canoe paddle is on it's way. There's a sillouette match in Carpenter a week from Saturday. 200 Captec brass ready to roll. I have some 410 gr 395 money bullets, and some 390 gr creedmoor bullets cast up. Anybody got some good recipes for either of those bullets in the 40-70? Could scare up some snovers , and I could cast some if necessary.

I haven't shot the .40-70 for a spell, not much since the Goex express powder was discontinued.
But if ypu should have some old Exp. 2F 68 gr of 2F with the snover shot quite well. I have targets under 2" @ 200 using that load.

70 gr of 2f exp with a 418 gr RN shot the best all around for the long range Alliance shoots.
This is using stretches ,30-40 brass.

I have a small batch loaded with 66 grs of KIK 1.5 under that patched bullet.
I'll wait till I get the rifle in hand before loading anymore so I can be sure what seating depth I can get away with. Don't want to have to pull and reseat like I did when the 44-77 was on it's way..

I should dig my #1 out and start shooting it again. It was my first Shiloh. The other day when I reorganized my mole den I saw a lot of loaded .40-70 shells in coffee cans with empty cases. I should shoot them up and start working with the OE powder in them. That rifle did quite well at long range using GG and PP.
But it really favored the round nosed like the original profile. That shot well at all ranges to 1200 yards.

If you get a chance give me some measurements of the Jamison brass. rim thickness, base diameter just above the rim and wall thickness and length if you would please.

Don, Be sure to share your .40/70 SS recipes so I can try to follow along. I've been using OE 1 1/2F but from what you say, I need to use more powder. Most of my brass (Hornady) is empty now so I'll anneal before reloading. Shoot sharp, Mike

Kurt this stuff is measuring .456 just at the web, which is a tad smaller than my fired Hornady 405 brass (fired in my 405 of course)

I have a 40-70ss in a CPA using 405 brass, it's a lot thicker than Jamison . I know that my 405 Hornaday will not fit your chamber.

TNX Don. Sounds like goo brass. Going to have to get some.
The Hornady .405 brass wont fit my Shiloh either. I had to make a swage die to take the base down so it fis the Shiloh's tight chamber. Then it makes fine brass for the PP.
