Need some sugestions

RE: Need some sugestions
Don.

Have you seen that .40-82 CPA?
If so did you notice if the extractor is at 6 o-clock or is it at 7 o-clock in that rifle?

RE: Need some sugestions
Kurt, just taking a guess here but I would think that the extractor on all of the CPA actions would be at 6:00. Also took a look at my CPA and it looks like the top of the hammer nose can be lowered some if you need some case rim clearance. Mine has the high speed hammer with recesses on both sides and I don't know if lowering the nose would cause any strength problems or not.
My rifle is a 38-55 with a 15" twist badger barrel on it and it shoots well. I have a mid range site on it and was surprised that I was easily able to reach 1000 yds with it and still had sight left. I can't say how well it shot at that range as I was just shooting off of my elbows and was all over the place, I was just impressed that the bullet got out that far. I was shooting a NEI postel of about 315 gr or so over 47 gr of Ctg. I have a Hoch mold that throws a 300 gr tapered bullet that seems to shoot very well. When I got to try that bullet I just sat it on top of 45 gr Ctg and had no problems keeping 10 out of 10 on the pig swinger. Now I was all over the swinger but a hit is a hit. I think a little more load development and that would be an excelent chicken/pig load. It may also make for a good long bullet for the turkeys and rams if the bullet were lengthened by another band and grease grove and get the weight up to around 340 or so. Just something to think about for the future I guess.

Sam.
The early CPA had the extractor at 7 and I think when Paul changed it to 6 h also beefed up the receiver. There is a CPA here at the range I shoot on and he has the extractor @7 and his receiver looks like it is not as wide as mine. But that is just me looking at it, not measuring it. That rifle is in a .25-20. It sure is a fine shooter.

Man that would mean all new moulds and brass if I get a 38 Smile

RE: Need some sugestions
Kurt, it may be that the early ones were a duplication of the original 44 1/2 and that he had made changes to the design to ease production. The 6:00 extractor would be easier to locate and cut and also easier to produce the extractor its self. However, do keep in mind that these are just guesses on my part. But either way he still makes a fine product.

Yes he does Sam. And he is very interesting man to spend time talking to also.
I found reinstalling the block can be a pain with the extractor not cooperating when putting things together Smile so I made a slave pin to hold the extractor in place and push it out when I insert the lever pin. Changing the block is not bad when the barrel is not screwed on yet.

Good idea. I've got a box of punches and after a bit of fiddling I always find something that'll work, but it would be nice to have something specific for the purpose.

RE: Need some sugestions
I am very sure that both Paul and Gail are very interesting to set and talk to. Kind of sucks that they are only about 3 to 4 hours from me and I have never made that trip. Maybe come spring I can drive up. For me at least it would be interesting to see his shop and how some of the things are made, being a retired toolmaker that kind of thing is always interesting.
I have heard mention of making slave pins for these actions but I have never done so. I just don't take my block out all that often. Yes I am sure it is easier with the barrel off, if nothing else it would make it a lot easier to twist and turn things to get it all lined up.

I have to agree with the above mentioned 44-60 BN. That looks like a fun & interesting cart. to play with. Should be a heck of a sil. round.

Bob.

The .44-60 bn or the .40-60 bn would make a good iron critter round. I have a friend that has what might be the last Shiloh carbine made on order in a .40-60 bn that had my interest for some time also, but I think the little extra mass gives one a little more assurance knocking the iron over.
