wash them with tide , add bleach , to the rinse cycle and have your wife iron them after hanging on the line for a day in the sunshine

as long as they are clean the color doesnt matter much ,although if they are cleaner it is easier to see fouling on the patch,so I use my old patches for starting and finish with a new clean one, then I know,
