RE: The .44-77
There ain't nothing wrong with a 44-77 OR barrel sights. In fact, I find it easier to get on a target with barrel sights than with a globe and tang. What's more, I frequently shoot better groups with the barrel sights than I do with tang and globe target sights. Not always, but when I want to demonstrate to a bolt gun shooter why I use a Sharps, I always use barrel sights.
I had a guy in here three days ago with a scoped Remington 700 in 308. Beyond 100 yards, the Shiloh 45-70 Roughrider OWNED the Remington. Granted, the guy was not a candidate to shoot on our Palma team--he hit the pig silhouette at 327 yards once out of 8 shots. I hit it three out of three, then shot the gong at 410, and hit it four in a row. He asked me if I could hit the turkey, and I hit it on the second shot. I have a 20 inch square gong at 504 yards and he wanted me to try that. I missed it just off the right edge at 3 o'clock twice in the same hole, and changed my sight picture slightly and hit it two in a row just above the white center at 12 o'clock, and quit shooting. I asked the guy if he wanted to try the longer targets, and he declined to shoot anymore.
The rifle has a Lawerence low notch rear barrel sight and a copper penny front. The load was a 511 grain paper patched bullet out of a Brooks mold over 71 grains of KIK 2f powder and a CCI BR2 primer. 13 shots, no wiping and no blow tube, just blow a couple of breaths up the breech out of your mouth, load and shoot.
Man, I love these rifles!
