Sharps only built slightly over 700 74 rifles in 50 anything.

10-4 Don, Thanks, my rifle firing 750 grains at 1365 fps would have to have been a stellar killer on Buffalo, I'll find out first hand some day.Wink

Period correct build I have in mind:

'74 Shiloh #3 Sporter.
30" #1 heavy barrel
Bone pack colors
Checkered steel shotgun butt
Schnabel fore end
Fire blued screws
Ladder barrel sight and copper penny front sight

45-110
44-90 SBN
44-77 SBN
40-90 SBN

A rifle so configured should be correct, did I miss anything?

That would be pretty representative.

Sorry gunner I put the wrong name on your handle.
That sight setting you see on this Hartford is set at 1585 yards when I shot the iron Buffalo on the Hamilton ranch with the bullet in the photo.

Thanks Don, a cool copper sight like the one Kurt has on his 44-77 should make it even more so correct.

I would like to build something not so common, but, brass being next to impossible on the 44's may rule them out, iirc cases can't be made for them from any other existing case.

The 40-90 SBN's can be made from 45-90 brass.

40-90 SBN or the mighty 45-110 it may have too be.

You might see if you could sweet talk Stephen Borurd into making you one of his Hartford front sights.

Don't know if that is one of Stephen's or not,

After looking at the list of rifles you have, I'll suggest you look at a C. Sharps Arms Hartford Model, 1874 of course, in .50/70 with a #1 1/2 Heavy barrel with Hartford collar, 28 or 30 inches long. That would look like a buffalo gun, for sure. It would do the job too. It would look something like my .44/90 with the 1 1/2 Heavy barrel although this rifle's barrel is 32 inches long. For prices on the barrels heavier than the #1 take a look at the new C. Sharps catalog. You can download that if you don't have it from their web site, www.csharpsarms.com. They also make a #1 3/4 Heavy barrel and that is the largest barrel which can be made with a Hartford collar. Just my 2 cents...
