Paper Patch question

RE: Paper Patch question
Hey Rick----------GREAT TIP THERE-----------i'll give that a go---inserting the wads thru the case mouth sized to 0.4505 is a tight fit, might ease that a bit.

Also i'm trying some loads in the 65 grain range for silhouettes and that takes more than one wad to fill the case properly, the slippery inside graphite surface will help that as well.

Testing will continue-----------silhouette match this saturday----second try with PP

Keep well and stay safe

RE: Paper Patch question
Dave, how much time are you finding for sighters with your wiping routine? Can you get 3 in if need be?

Thanks,

Chris.

RE: Paper Patch question
Hi Chris:

I have a wiping rod set up with a chamber swab and currently only run one damp patch making sure i get the chamber swab deep enough to dry the bore where the patched slug sits.

So far it seems to be working - bet i could run a dry patch behind the damp patch and still get all 15 rounds in--------patches and cartridges and wiping rod have to be placed for minimum reaching
and digging for patches.

Hope i answered the question well enough----------i'm still experimenting and learning

RE: Paper Patch question
Match/load report:

Shot our club silhouette match today---conditions were HOT pushing 102 by my trucks thermometer---sunny, light variable wind

I built 4 loads 65,70,75 and 80 grains of Swiss 1 1/2 behind a 500 grain BACO 0.444 Creedmore wrapped to 0.4505, normal wad column with a 0.140 long lube cookie

Started with Turkey's--------killed 2, shot all around the edges, not the best way to start the day--group was roughly round with no strangeness like fliers

Ram's next-----killed 3, better but still terrible------again a round group all around the edges of the critters

Chickens---killed 2 of the feathered fiends-----a 4 minute group formed just a bit low--------things are looking up a bit

Pigs---i had loaded the 70 grain cartridges to shoot at the pigs----i had also loaded 12 additional 65 grain rounds--------on the strength of the pretty nice chicken shoot group i decided to try the 65's at the Pigs.

First shot wide of the swinger---then next 4 hammered the swinger--the next 7 died in order----switched to the 70 grainers for the last 7 targets and CLEANED THE PIGS-----nice way to finish a tough test day.

Sooooooo next match will see loads from say 62 to 70 grains and see if i can do a bit better at the Turkey's and Ram's

Thanks to Dave B and the Ralph C for great spotting and ducking the scrap paper shreds

RE: Paper Patch question
Sounds like you had fouling problems. I Learned the hard way this past weekend , when it's really hot like this, you simply have to keep wiping wet patches until they come clean, then a dry one, load and shoot.

RE: Paper Patch question
Perhaps Don-----------wiping was just one damp patch, it did however feel smooth all the way through---one follow-up patch after the relay cleaned er up !!

Humidity was of course high 70% easily, we were all mopping sweat

Very possible that the hot loads were fouled worse than the lighter loads-------ya could have branded steers with the barrel !!!!

Testing and hopefully learning will continue

I lightly lube the outside of the whole patch if I dont use a lube wad.
The cases I have the problem with are the .44-90 bn. They hold 100 to 110 grain of powder maybe the extra pressure those loads have plus the reduction of the case at the neck is the snake in the wood pile causing this. I do know that the same powder load in the bottle necked .44-90bn case drives the bullet a lot faster than the .44-100 straight. I can shoot a no lube bullet in the 100 with out pulling the neck off but I do get stretching.

Kurt

Would I be correct to believe that's due to the bottle neck of the case?

I patch just enough to leave about open spot about the size of a pencil eraser in the middle of the bullet, Patching with 16-1 the bullet will bump up too the top of the patch and I patch just below the ogive.

Kenny, Don, Kurt, Bobw, anybody, would there be any way I could get a pic of the base of a patched bullet for future reference?
