Tried some Olde Eynsford

RE: Tried some Olde Eynsford
I shot some more Olde E today. The 70 gr. load averaged 1306, with an ES of just 12 fps. I checked my notes and last time this load was 1308, not 1320 like I said in the first post here, so I apologize for that. The lighter loads with less compression were not quite as accurate on paper, but what I would be more concerned with is the ES was quite a bit higher with the lighter the charge/compression.

Just loaded up 24 rounds with 70 gr. 2f of old E for the 40-70ss. Have been real busy for the last 45 days and now the heat is on down here(105 and 10% hum.). Got up @ 4:00 tue morning and ran 50 out of the 40-70 with 70 gr. 2f kik which is the keeper load it like's. This load will do 2" moa @ 200 all day long and works all the way out to 900. Don, I will post all the details as soon as I get a chance to shoot, maybe in the morning.Big Grin.

RE: Tried some Olde Eynsford
40-70ss C-Sharps 1n18 twist 30 in. barrel
425 gr. pure lead cuped base patched to bore with seth cole 8# 30% cotton rag
70 gr. of old e 2f drop tubed 30" .200 comp.
.030 veg.fiber wad- .020 tablet card- 3/16" cooke (1 to 1 spg and jojoba oil)-.020 tablet card- .030 veg.fiber wad.
bullet was finger seated .190 into the case.
wiped 1 wet patch between each shot ( jojoba oil,h20 and 4 drops dawn dish soap)
Temp. was 78 deg. 18% humidity and wind was dead calm. 5:15 this morn. right after sunup.
Two 12 shot groups, 2 foulers and then 10 for score @ 200 yrds.
First target was 2" moa and 2nd target was 1 1/2 moa. NO FLYERS.
This stuff shoots with half the fouling than kik and at least 1/3 the smoke. Brass cleaned up better and it took only two wet and two dry and the rifle was clean. Good soft lube ring too.
This is good powder. Will see what it will do in 100+ temps next day or so. I don't do crony stuff but the old E is faster, it shot 3" higher than the 2f kik load. Big GrinBig Grin

Semtav, I like the way you think, the jerk behind the trigger must have made it shoot high.Big GrinBig Grin

tim,
your wiping solution looks interesting.
it should have suitable lubricative qualities for bpcr.
how much oil in how much water?
do you have to keep it shaken up?
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: Tried some Olde Eynsford
Bruce, I mix 3 teaspoons jojoba oil, 1/4 teaspoon of dish soap and a quarter cup of water. Stir or if sealed in a squirt bottle shake it up and put it on a stack of patchs. Squeeze out the excess and yer good to go. The soap keeps the solution mixed long enough to get it on the patchs. When you need some more just shake it up.
I got this from " Loading and Shooting Paper Patched Bullets " By Randolph S. Wright. Of all the books I have read this one is the best bar none!!
Randy has been shooting PP since 1973. This is a beginner's guide to PP and he takes you from A to Z. Dam good book.

tim,
if your dish soap is indeed soap and not detergent, you have the ingredients of lube in your wiping solution.
this would make it possibly superior to soluble cutting oil solutions.
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: Tried some Olde Eynsford
I shot Eynsford at the Quigley in the 44-77 paper patch and no wiping between shots.
I also had built up a box of 50 for the #3 45-70 with a 420 gr patched bullet wrapped in the Seth Cole 8# treated with jojoba after it was seated, one of the muzzleloader original felt wads, the rubber cork wad, on top of 70 grs Eynsford 2f. I took that rifle down to the line Thursday, we fired the entire course with the ladder sights, averaged around 50% hits, let another fella shoot the last 4 rounds in the box at the offhand target, and the only cleaning patch that rifle saw was the 4or 5 that cleaned it up when we got back to camp..
