Good/Bad news

Bad news is the .44-100 fell short of my expectations shooting long range.
I have to work out a new bullet alloy and maybe a tighter patched bullet that will hold the velocity that the E powder drives my bullets around 1500 fps. Found 1/16 lead/tin alloyed bullets in the sand at 800 yards that did not hold the lands and stripped; bad news!
The good news is the .44-77 using barrel sights with a 73 grain load of the 1.5 E powder will hit the Buffalo iron around 3/4 mile---- .82 mile distance set with a GPS with 2' accuracy

I really do like that 77!!

For a light weight rifle with the standard barrel single trigger and cressent butplate it's a very good and pleasant rifle to shoot.
I have a feeling that the long nosed elliptical bullets are taking a beating when they drop back down to subsonic plus with then not holding in the lands they are not getting enough rotation to stay stable.
They probably whistle like a mimi ball shot from a smooth bore musket.
Carol once mentioned that she heard some of the bullets whistling when she worked the pit pulling the targets at Raton, but the once hitting paper went through straight and grouped good.
Still having a problem with some of the brass not extracting making it a bear shooting it during a match.

How many cases do you have?

This .44-100 might turn into a .44-77 if I cant get it tamed down for long range.

I don't remember if it's 75 or 100. They are all still in the bag and untrimmed or sized.
Could also send that tapered gibbs block along if you want to try that bullet.

I really don't need any brass for the 100. I have 500 and some I havent sized down to the 44 that will stay 45 to replace a lost case or damaged when I need it.

As far as the Gibbs bullet. I have the Sharps profile bullet that is just about the same and it's adjustable.

Ok, I thought maybe if you wanted to try a handful of these cases to see if they were just a touch smaller in the head diameter.
I think I'ld be pretty tempted to just stick with that sharps bullet and leave that other one alone except for midrange stuff maybe.

I'm casting some 1.420 Sharps bullets that dont do to much in the .44-90 bn but the 100 shoots them good.
I used a .485 gr in the .44-77 for the 3/4 mile shooting and they worked very good in the 19 twist.
I always said the ODG's had a reason for shooting those round nosed torpedoes.
At 3/4 mile I still had plenty room left on the slide to go farther.

Yeh when Ned Roberts talked about the last Creedmoor match, he said those old guys with their 44-77's loaded with their 480 gr bullets turned out in droves and showed why that combination worked so good.
