Shiloh 1877 finally on the schedule
Just got done doing all the final payment and changes to my Shiloh 1877 English Sporting Rifle #1 . I am always amazed at the patience and kindness from the Shiloh folks when talking on the phone. The round barrels start 14Aug21 mine will be 32” polished , I am aware of the “ reflective’ nature of polished blued steel , I’ll live with it for a Shiloh polished round barrel as I have the other two contours on other Shiloh’s but none polished. The 1877 looks fabulous to my eye with a round barrel. I skipped another 40-70 2.5 SS looked at the 40-50 SBN and decided on another 45-70 standard chamber . I like the cartridge a lot and maybe my favorite BPCR cartridge, not that I have a lot of experience with the bigger BPCR cartridges as I have none. The DD bullets have changed the 45-70 to something very exciting for me and kept everything simple.
I did buy a Cecil Freddi stock blank, nice piece of English Walnut with forend to be a schnabble AA finish, brass escutcheons , fire blued screws, standard CCH ( no one does nicer) . Rigby Rib, traditional steel butt plate. It it will be my only Shiloh without a cheek rest.
I had always wanted a 1877 when Axtell was around, I met Carmen in Sacramento CA and she was such a great lady and invited me shoot one her rifles . I’m still in awe of the rifle she had, just a magnificent design the 1877’s are.

Randy I have a Axtell rifle and when the box was opened I told my Friend I will take it.
The 77 Axtell just has a different feel when you shoulder it. They just don't have the bulky feel like the 74's
I even have a heal sight for it and mine is a .45-2.6.
I like your wood pick. Good straight grain in the wrist where it need the strength.
Don't forget to post some pictures when it's in your hands.

I was beginning to think it would never happen and I never bothered them, nothing good in life comes fast. Thank you Kurt , I had a highly figured piece of wood on a Gibbs rifle that cracked high in the wrist. I was fortunate enough to find a guy in Washington that did a wonderful repair, but it’s repaired. It cracked right in the figure line, beautiful but repaired. That’s when I took those stupid Golden Rods out of my gun safes, in the west we need humidity for our nice guns, guitars and fine woods.
Don, whole new animal from the 74’s I would imagine ,it’s going to be different not setting the trigger on a Sharps rifle.
I am also having it D/T’d for a MVA “A” scope with the third option and a mil dot reticle ,I think the 4 mil. reticle to start with.
Kurt that Axtell is as nice as any I have ever seen, there’s an elegance to 77’s that no other American gun maker came close to. Their on par with nice European rifles.

Randy that single trigger Kirk puts on those is a dream to shoot
My 45-90 uses about 15 minutes less elevation on the staff than a 74 or hi wall.
I have also found that I need to set my sticks much lower
I am planning to hopefully get an appointment with Kirk later this fall to run this rifle up and have him drill it for 23in MVA

Well I thought mine would arrive late September got it the next August but it dang sure was worth the wait
But then again we had all the COVID crap and the EPA making a valiant attempt to shut down lying operations so hopefully you’ll have yours half wore out by green up

I haven't drilled and tapped my Axtell yet. I been putting it off but after the last Quigley it became a reality that I have to clamp the barrel on my mill and get the job done. I just ordered another DZ scope, the new 10X MVA A scope I just got has a little more power then I like for shooting off hand so I think it might go down the road to help pay for the DZ I just ordered and it will be here on Sat. and I think it will go on the 77.

Man will this rifle addition ever end ?????? Big Grin

Kurt and Don you guys both have scope experience and if I may ask you guys some less than educated questions ?

I decided on the MVA “A” scope 8 X with the new adjustable front mount, my question is how hard is it and what does it take to mount one of these scopes ? Is that something Shiloh does ? Special consideration for removing/ installing, how do you store your scoped rifles ? Do you remove the scope before and after shooting or like a smokeless rifle that wears its glass more or less permanently.
I appreciate your wise and learned experience.
