A refresher on the bullet before and after wrapping and loading.

That is one fine looking bullet there, Don. It does look somewhat familiar too. There is just something about that style of paper patch bullet that really makes the old cartridges stand up and look proud! They make the shooter look his best too! Some of us need all the help we can get.

I'm happy to see it working well for you.

Jim, that nose is what Brooks calls his original postel nose. I really like it, I have a couple of other bullets with that same nose I do like the way they shoot. One of these days when I don't have much else to do I want to try and take this bullet out to 1000 in the 40-70 and see how it holds up, and I'm sort of itching to try a batch of them in the 40-90 bn.

Don,

As I have said many times that is not my design, I just "borrowed" it from pictures of old cartridges. I just like the looks of it and it seems to fit the old cartridges so well from a looks standpoint. Also it is proving to be a design that is very easy to get accurate results with in a number of different rifles, in .45 caliber too. I know one guy who is shooting that design in a .45-90 and doing much better than he was with various GG bullets he tried. In .45 caliber it does well out 1000 yards. I've no doubt it will shoot that far in .40 caliber, just how well I'd like to know.

It's not a high BC bullet, but I know you know just how much that matters! Maybe the ODG knew a thing or two?

Jim my 45 caliber dual diameter shoots very well to 1000. It's also from Brooks and it's a nose pour adjustable with his original postel nose. I just wish I would of had him make a flat base plug for it during the build.
My first dual diameter bullet came about 10 years ago from Bernie at Old West, he said he copied it from a bullet pulled from a factory loaded 45xxx round. It was .435 on the base and while if you wrapped it in pretty heavy paper it would shoot ok to 300 yards or so. I used it to take an elk or two and some antelope, but sort of set it back , until I got the first 44 -77. Wrapped in 8 or 9 lb paper that bullet shoots very well in the 44-77's, and both 44-90 straights.
I did some checking on the 40 caliber bullet this evening. Cast from 16-1 it measures 400 on the base and 395 at the base of the nose. Wrapped in 7 lb paper it fits about right in the mouth of a fired 40-90 case.. Now I got the itch to cast about 100 of those and take with me to Phoenix...But that 10 lb rifle wears on me pretty hard during a match. Smile
