Sight settings
First timer here so please be gentle.
A buddy and I are going to try a 600 yard match and would like sight settings to start with. We both have settings for 500 meters.
My load will be a 535 gn money bullet at 1300 fps.
His will be a 435 gn money at 1200 fps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Anybody have a clue as to the BC of these bullets? My ballistic calculator starts smoking when I try to figure it out.
Thank you.

RE: Sight settings
derskeeter,

I will pass this along in hopes it help, with my .40-65 I have to come up 9 1/2 minutes from my ram setting to 600 yards.

Also if you set up a target at 40 yards and sight your rifle to hit 29 1/2 inches high you will be very close to on at 600 yards. It's a quick and easy way to get a 600 yard setting and can be done safely any place you can set up a target with a safe backstop at 40 yards.

Good luck!

RE: Sight settings
Quick and dirty rule of thumb , if you have your ram setting , come up about 7 minutes. That will get you close enough you won't burn up all your sighters looking for the x ring elevation.

RE: Sight settings
If you want an idea of the approximate BC, use 0.5 for the .45 cal money bullet, and 0.475 for the .40 cal. These produce very close come ups for my rifles.

RE: Sight settings
.45-90 with 30" bbl.
MV is 1355 fps with 540 gn, PJ Creedmoor.
I use MVA Long Range Buffalo Soule, and a MVA #113 w/lollipop insert.
Range Staff setting
100 yd = 37
200 yd = 45
300 yd = 58
400 yd = 69
500 yd = 85
600 yd = 105

These settings were taken at 4K'(ASL)in the summertime high desert.

RE: Sight settings
I have the same sights on a 32 inch barrel. My actual velocity is averaging 1305. All of my data is in meters but I can tell your load is shooting a bit flatter than mine.
All of my shooting is in the northwest in high humidity and average temp in the mid 70's.
Thank you, will give this a try tomorrow.

RE: Sight settings
Lumpy those are almost exactly the same numbers as my 45-110 shooting a 545 Creedmoor with 98 grains of Swiss 1.5.
Anybody heard of the method used in the book "The Art of Shooting the Rifle" from 1888? He winds his tang sight down to 0 then shoots a target at 12.5 yards. He measures where the bullet hits and uses one minute for each 1/8th inch the bullet hits low plus 1/8" for bullet drop at 12.5 yards. He has a table in the book that gives the come up for each range to 1200 yards. For example: I shot the target at 12.5 yards and the hole was 4" low. That means I would set 33 minutes for 100 yards. I use 37. I compared it to my tested settings and it worked well to 500 yards but not beyond that. Interesting to see what the ODGs were up to.
