44 ?

7Picked up a hiwall to build a 44 rifle,can get a Green mountain barrel in #3 and #4 Winchester taper and have a guy that has a 44-70 Maynard reamer that Dan T designed. Which barrel do I want? Or a different chamber,just for greasers.

#4 might be a touch heavy to make weight for silhouette, but it would sure lay in the sticks nice. 44-70 would make a pretty nice chamber I think. If it doesn't there's always the ability to make it longer.

If you can weigh everything but the barrel, give GM a call and they can tell you what the blank will weigh. I put a 3 1/2 on a pedrosoli roller action and I think its a bit light for a 44-77. I think I would have been happier with a 4.

I had Lee Shaver put a #4 Green Mountain 30" long on a Pedersoli Sharps action in 45-70 and it weighs 12.32 pounds with a long range Baldwin Soule rear sight, the front sight is a globe with level and it has scope blocks on the barrel. It also has the heavy steel buttplate Pedersoli puts on thier Sharps silhouette models. I figure if I had to trim weight because someone weighed my rifle then I'd take the scope blocks off and also put my mid range Baldwin Soule on instead of the long range. I would think your highwall action would weigh less.

FWIW, I just sat my roller on my bathroom scales, and we all know they do lie, just ask your wife. But it said my roller was between 10 and 11 pounds, it definitely weighs less than my CPA. my Highwall, and my Sharps, and they all have heavy barrels on them.

My CPA #4 Douglas 30" 1 1/8" at the breach and 1" at the muzzle in a .45/2.4 with a beaver tail forearm and scope blocks iron butplate weighs 11 pounds 13 OZ. The wood has a cheek piece and the wood is dense. The tang sight base is mounted but not the tang sight.
I just weight it on a postal scale my bathroom scale weighs 5# heavy

Yep see told you they lie. I know my Sharps #1 with heavy barrel, sights, 45-70 has been weighed for matches and comes in at 11.7# and it is heavier than my roller.

To give you a idea on barrel weight.
Since I got bit hard playing the silhouette game I ordered a .40-65. with a #2 round barrel that is 1” across the flats and that may be a bit light so I increased it to a #2.5 which will be 1.03” at the breech and about .925” at the muzzle. I'm thinking that it will come in at around 10 pounds. It should make a fine off hand rifle.
My .44-77 Shiloh has a standard light weight 30" octagon barrel 1" at the breach and .900" at the muzzle it weighs in at 10#3.5 Oz. with a crescent butplate and barrel sights.......Kurt

The reason for asking is I have a highwall in 40/65 with a #4 GM barrel and it is a little heavy for offhand,but shoots lights out off sticks.I wonder in .44 if it would be a little lighter or if a #3 would be too light.A #3 GM barrel is 1.010 to .920 in octagon.

The #4 would be a bit lighter. To bad they don't offer the good caliber in 3 1/2, like they do the others..
When I had Oregon Barrel duplicate the profile of the Browning bpcr, only had them make it to finish at 32 inches, that rifle comes in at 12lb 3oz. If I took the grip cap off it would likely make silhouette weight.
