22 BPCR
Evening Gentlemen
Having shot a Crossno liner in my Shiloh Sharps for a year or so now at 22 Silhouette, I'm considering commissioning a dedicated rifle for silhouette competition.
Seems a 28 inch barrel is a popular length, haven't landed on exactly which barrel yet, still doing research.
The "match chamber" is the confusing part of the barrel equation---i have found perhaps 20 different chambers listed as "match"
Is there any consensus among the 22 shooters here for the best chamber for this really fun game ?
thanks for any insight
Dave

RE: 22 BPCR
There's just not that much you can do with a 22 chamber.. So what ever "match" chamber the builder of your rifle is likely to work as good as the next.
The bigger discussion probably comes from which barrel is better,, (Douglas, Green Mtn, both work quite well)
But then there's the end argument in which ammo is the best and the rifle is the only one that can settle that one. ( Norma TAC, Norma Match, Sk rifle match, and Aquila rifle match have all earned high points in rifles that hang around here) When you do get around to ammunition testing, do it at the ram line.
A wise man can always be found alone. A weak man can always be found in a crowd.

RE: 22 BPCR
A question similar to this was asked over on the ASSRA board and it was suggested that they go to http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php and inquire there. Said that the folks there would have the best answers as to what barrel and what chamber is best.

RE: 22 BPCR
I have no complaints with my CPA .22.
I really had this rifle build as a off hand practice rifle because there are just no .22 silhouette matches around here anymore like there was in the past so I had CPA build this rifle to match the .44-75 interchangeable barrel for this action.
The barrel is a XX premium Douglas barrel and I used Pauls chamber reamer for this rifle. I have read a lot of positive comments the way the CPA .22 shot. The chamber is just as important as the rest of the rifle.
When I got this rifle home I ordered a bunch of .22 rimfire ammo that is popular in the .22 match games to try at 200 yards for the results. Some of that ammo cost over $25./50 but I had to see what this rifle preferred. In the end I found no difference between the high dollar Lapua or the others I tested in this rifle. I settled on the Norma Match and ordered a full case so I had the same lot# and the Fed match.
This rifle weighs 12# 1/2 OZ. A little heavy for using for the small bore silhouette matches that are all shot off hand, the rifle does get a little heavy shooting many off hand shots, but the CPA does not take the back seat to my low wall or the Winchesters and others I have.

RE: 22 BPCR
Dave I don't shoot my .22's as much as I should, but like Kurt I have a CPA with a XX Douglas barrel and whatever match chamber they use. The rifle is less picky than my Crosno liner, and more accurate. I'm really impressed. It'll shoot the cheaper SK Standard Plus better than my Crossno liner shoots RWS R50 or Lapua CenterX. It shoots even better with the good stuff, but SK Standard Plus shoots well enough for my prone practice.
Chris.

RE: 22 BPCR
I only shoot a Crossno liner for chicken practice. But I do know that Dan Zimmerman makes a lot of 22 rifles and you know how well he shoots. I have never had him give me bad advice.

HI Kid-----------Gunlake
Good idea Kid I'll quiz Dan at State------i'll also get Jimmy involved at the next Yaupon match saturday
My Crossno liner is a shooter, 30's are pretty regular occurrences, a dedicated rifle is just a want right now, we will see
Hey Kid are you shooting 22's at state ?

RE: 22 BPCR
Dave the barrel is a 28" 1.033" at the muzzle and 1.250" at the breach. The CPA reamer was used but I don't have the specs for it. I have just about every .22 match chamber prints from the top .22 match rifles made. About 19 or 20. The chamber is very tight at .2240" at the case mouth. It's so tight that it is a hard push to get the round seated. I let the breach block finish caming the round in.
I think the reason the rifle shoots so well is the tight chamber and a very heavy stiff barrel. I don't think there is much vibration going on when the round goes off.
I don't know if Douglas air gauge their .22 XX premium barrels or not.
