RE: Now what
The 44-70 would be a great little cartridge. Might want to jump on that price of those Green Mtn Barrels.

RE: Now what
What is the ROT and bore/groove on the GM barrel? and dimensions, breach and muzzle?

16 twist, the rest I couldn't tell you, they do have them listed on their web, they also have #3 and #5 winchester tapered barrels in 44.

Now there's an idea, you could have a .40-50 lite weight barrel put on one of them MVA actions and send it to me... Smile

RE: Now what
MY GM .44 barrel is a 17 twist, .438/.446 bore/grove. Mine is a 3 1/2 Winchester taper and I wish now I had gone with a 4. It is just a touch on the light side.

Gee Don... it's tough to have to make decisions like that Wink ..Come to think of it ..an MVA pistol grip high wall action on a big 44 would be something else. Nice bone/charcoal cased receiver ... yep... got it pictured already Confused You've probably answered this elsewhere but what are you using for the parent case or do you have your own reamer based on a 45 basic necked down a tad ?

RE: Now what
I think this time I would use Zack Taylors reamer. Which uses the 45-90 case.

RE: Now what
Would seem the best of both worlds then with no..or very little case forming involved and a good stable of 44 projectile designs to work with. With only about 12 thou between 44 & 45 I gather you'd just run it into a sizing die once with a little wax and the job's done ? Heading the way of a dedicated pp chamber or a shallow transition to allow you some latitude .. as per our 44/77's. 2.4" vs 2.6" long ? All sounds very interesting.. so keep us posted on developments.

RE: Now what
I really like the 44-90 st. I used Iron Coyotes reamer on that one, and it's a dead ringer for the original reamer that C Sharps uses. It will handle either patched or naked bullets. It is like you say a simple deal just run the 45-90 brass in the 44-90 size die and it's all done.
