Can anyone give me some + or - comments on the RCBS .40-400-SP-CSA mold and bullets, when used in the .40/70 SS? I just got this new mold and haven't put handles on it yet. Shoot sharp, Mike

I shot the flat nosed one in the canoe paddle the other day and it shot alright with 68 grs. of 1.5 oe and a .060 fiber wad.

Mike that's not the pointy one and it shoots OK but not as good as the saeco 740. I used to have both but sold them.Bill

If I looked at the right bullet, that one you're talking about is the one I have. It shoots pretty decent, and has done well on gongs to 1000 yds, from a 40-65.

Bill & Don, I've got the 370 grain version of the Saeco mold but I don't find it as consistent as I'd hope out past 300 meters. Maybe that's my load or just me. And the 40-400-CSA mold came to me from an eBay auction where I won the bid at just $45. When the mold arrived, I was surprised to see that it is brand new, un-used. I'll use it, for sure, and maybe get more turkeys and rams than with the other bullets. Right now I've got about 75 empty 40-70 SS cases and most of those will be fed with the 400 grain bullets, just as soon as I can cast some. A report shall follow. Shoot sharp, Mike

Just a report, I shot some of the 40-400-SP-CSA bullets today, sized to .410" and lubed with Vigilante. They didn't do too bad at all and I should expect them to improve once they get a little more experience. The load I used in the .40/70 SS was 63 grains of Olde Eynsford 1 1/2F and if I do add more powder it will be just grain at a time. Today's shooting was just done at 100 yards and my group was a rather wide one due to some (extreme) windage adjustments. More later, after some better shooting. Shoot sharp, Mike

Hey Don, Do you load the 68 grain charge with the bullet seated in the case deep enough to cover all of the lube grooves? I will give that a good try. Shoot sharp, Mike

Mike,yes that's the only way I can get a greaser to seat in this chamber.
