Load Details
I have a suggestion and promise
If you post a load, include all the detials like powder, grains, case length, primer, wad, seating depth, compression, bullet, taper crimp...
Noting that a load of 72grs of powder XXX shot a 1" Grp at 200yds leaves a lot of detail missing to duplicate a load for testing.
On this forum, I promise to provide just such info on any loads I report on that are working well for me.

RE: Load Details
Sounds good Dick.

For you shooters using a .45-70 using 1.5 KIK or 2F KIK.

My .45-70 is going to be used for the first time for long range at Lodi.
The bullet I will be using is a new money bullet mould from Buff arms that casts a 1.504" long bullet at .444" and I will be using 2F KIK with Win brass and 1.5 KIK with Remington brass.
This bullet came a little longer then I expected.
I feel this bullet is a little long for the .45-70 velocity range, but if some of you are using this bullet please give me a suggested load to start with.
I have some loaded for Lodi with 82 grains if 1.5 K it is a fair load but not good at 2.5-3" @ 200 but I dont have time to get it down where I think it can be.

You are using the .444 bullet
What diameter are you patching it to? What Paper are you using?
What lead/tin mix are you using?
What Primer?
What wad and wad thickness?
What is your case length
What depth are you seating the bullet
What compression are you using
I want to do some testing with PP in the 45-70 but have not gotten the time to do so yet.

RE: Load Details
Dick.

Here is the run down on the load.
The bullet is a BACO .444 money bullet 1.504 long. 538 gr.
18 # lead 1 roll 95% tin 5% antimony. 95/5 Oatey solder.
7-1/2# Southworth 8D Parchment Deed paper .0018" 100% cotton Cockle finish.
Patched to .451
Rem Brass 2.1 long full length sized with a WLR primer.
82 gr. of 1.5 KIK compressed .195"
Bullet seated in the case .150" light taper crimp holding it so it wont drop out.
3 wads .025 over the powder .060 cork .460" diameter .012 card under the bullet. No lube used.
The .025" wad is cut from Karropak gasket stock from Napa. very soft so it expands under pressure.
The cork is cut from a dense gasket stock from Tractor Supply.
The .012 is cut from pretty fluorescent pink and yellow poster stock from Staples.

I have shot several 10 shot groups over 7 different days at 200 yds with most shots in a tight cluster of 1.5" but some walked out to 3.5"
Conditions were good nothing more then 10 mph winds but heavy overcast mostly and some days light rain. So it was most likely bad breaks do to vision.

I will find out this weekend how it hold up at Creedmoor ranges.

Good luck shooting and I look forward to hearing about your results.

That is a great breakdown of the load

I tired some of my 110 loads without a CG but results were poor. I know if you wipe after every shot, you should not need a CG, but the physicis of the load just likes it and the bore wipes really easy and clean, so I have no problem putting in the GC as long a performance continues. I did pick up some of the CORK at TSC, have not had a chance to really try it out...too many guns to little time!

RE: Load Details
Ok Dick.

Perfect conditions this morning for load development.
Good light and no wind but the range was busy with Law Enforcement special op team that train on our range.
But they said plenty of room but they for some reason were shooting on the 200 yard range and had the pit frames used up so I set up on the berm in front of the pit at 185 yds.
I started shooting the Browning High Wall using the 82 gr 1.5 KIK load of the .45-70 rounds and those holes are under the blue tape.

Next I got the Shiloh out and started shooting it and one of the LEO's came over and asked what the H are you shooting Huh I said it was a 1874 Sharps and I asked why and he said you just cut one hole with 4 shots, I been watching you shoot, I rolled over and looked through my scope and sure enough I had a good group going and I took one more shot and it walked out.
That was the same load as above but I used 82 gr of 2F KIK.
When we walked down to paste one guy said un real shooting that with black powder and iron sights Tongue I just smiled.

Pasted all holes and shot a second string but this 5 I used the same load as above using the rounds I will use this weekend with 1.5 KIK but I pulled the 1/18 bullets and used straight WW to see how they hold up and dropped the sights a little and shot the 5 shots on the bottom.
I dont think I can do any better no mater what I change.
Lets see if they hold up out at the 800, 900, and 1000.
I did mine lead with these PP bullets when I cleaned the rifle.
I might have to get rid of that .45 degree chamber end or clean after every relay.

Now that is some good shooting

I just don't understand why you are getting leading with the PP.
My paper is just as thin as yours, 100% cotton and I am shooting it out of both the Shiloh and the C Sharps 45 degree chambers but no leading in either the 45-70 or the 45-110 using the same bullet. I am patching the entire .444 length of the bullet, 2 wraps for an end diameter of .450 and there is a small hole in the patch on the bullet base when I finish folding the patch over the base. The patch about blows apart when it comes out the bore...just pieces laying here and there to recover.

Really looking forward to your long range results.

RE: Load Details
Dick.

I never thought about looking for patches. Range was to busy anyway.
With only 1/8 or so in the case I wouldn't think to much would catch on that 45 degree wall at the chamber end.

Yes those two groups look good. The conditions were good.
But the distance was under 200 yards and that bullet is very long. I'm just afraid that when the wind comes up and the slower spin that long bullet will get at the .45-70 velocity that it might be a tough road out at 800 +.
I see this with the slow twist my .44's have with a bullet to long.

RE: Load Details
Kurt, with 82gns of powder, it's mov'n faster than you think?
Have you run'em over the crono yet?
FWIW: I'm loading 80gns of 3F Goex in my .45-90. With a PJ #45001 C'moor(30:1 alloy)and out of my Shiloh #1 w/30" hvy. bbl. it's ave. runs at 1355 fps.
