There is that, granted. In referring to GG vortex I was looking at the premise in context of parasitic drag on the shank rather than the, uh, tailgate? Now if we could get rid of the tailgate on bullets we'd be on to something. :-)

Parasitic drag is an issue of friction where induced drag relates to cross section area. There is a good reason aircraft designers began to pursue laminar flow airfoils back in WW2. Surface/skin turbulence creates a lot of friction/drag. A bullet comparison would be wad cutters versus spitzers. The very concept of VLD bullet nose design rests upon minimized turbulence above the boundary layer flow field.

Don, I had a curious epiphany couple of hours ago. Having described the imponderable aspects of comparing PP and GG bullets and ruminating on it awhile, it came to me that one could contrive GG bullets of same length, caliber and weight, but with different characteristics in the grooves. By that I mean a few deep grease grooves versus many shallow grooves. My bet is the shallow groove bullet will generate less drag/drop and wind deflection. You know of such bullets?

Yes Dan the micro groove money bullet is just such a bullet. And that is one of the claims to fame of the "money" bullet is the less need for long sight staffs at extended ranges.

Well then, there you have it.

Was fiddling around last night and took measure of a few lead bullets I have. First two calculate to .439 and .410 BC. Another reads up around .592 which is quite high IMO.

The first two, respectively: .50 caliber FRN of 800 grains and .56 caliber of 900 grains. The last is also .56 caliber but at 1300 grains. MV for all three in the range of 1100 fps. The calculation is simplistic but in the ball park I think. Now you know why slug gun shooters use heavy guns.

Don, except for the bullets. Are the 2 loads the same?
What's the bullets weight?
Any SWAG on MV?

Weights and velocity very very close. You should be noticing a good amount of variance with your patched and the PJ bullet.

Yeh this 44 is a horse of another color, and I'm still on a wide learning curve with it. With that Old West Bullet I was getting anywhere from 8-17 minutes difference in elevation and about half the wind in all 4 of the 45-70's.

I was seeing 12"-13" diff. with the bullets from your mould in that '90, w/90gns of 3F goex @ 600yds, 4K' asl.
