Best brass for Shiloh

Hi All,

Buyin brass for the Shiloh 45-70 and for a Win 30-30 so tried once fired Starline brass. Usin Lee dies and Wilson trimmer (along with separate size gages to keep track of stretching). The 45-70 brass is too fat for all three--die, trimmer case holder and size gage. And I know the Shilohs are reputed to be tight.

Figure summa this brass was fired in sumthin loose fitting and is a toss, but all of it? What brass to get? Can't join the Shiloh forum and have to ask here. Keep seein that people feel forced to use Starline, but don't know whether it runs large and if there's another option. And once I get the brass that'll fit the Shiloh I know it'll work in the die. Yeah. It's too fat. Only gets all the way in to w/i maybe 3/4". But I went to Shiloh site on the off-chance they say sumthin, and they actually sell 45-70 brass in Rem. So...

Sorry. Guess I'll just buy some new Rem. brass, but still...it's weird, right? I mean, I know people are usin S'line. Maybe I got a bunch that was military fire? Didn't know whether it was the Lee dies, but the Wilson stuff confirmed it exactly. Thanks

Doug if it starts in the sizing die it simply needs to be fully re-sized-----lube the case and run it into the die until the shell holder touches the bottom of the sizing die----------the it will fit any 45-70 standard chamber---------------i used remington, winchester, star line and norma

Okay Dave, the die lube will be here soon under a different order and I'll try that, but it wouldn't go under two different greases and even some dry lube I tried. If I had a digital caliper (just have analog), maybe I'd have a better idea how fat this stuff is to tell ya. Thanks

With a good case lube it will size just fine------------i use lanoline, just the smallest film will do the trick---RCBS die lube is great---SIZING is what the full length sizing die does Doug

Study up a bit more on your reloading basics and you'll do ok

Went to some black lithium I managed to find and it did the trick. Felt like it wanted a coupla passes so as not to crimp it, the resistance bein so great, but it worked.

Yeah, first time reloader and showin my greens.

Ok Doug you have a start----------get the sizing lube and you'll do fine-----grease will stick a case in your die and cause you to by a "stuck case puller" !!!!!!!!!!!!

Take your time and pay attention to the details

But is it supposed to be dimpling the cases all the way around about an inch down? Seems to be collapsing the walls. Each dimple a 1/4" line. Gotta walk the dogs.

Sounds like too much lube left on the case when you put it into the die. Minimum grease film is a must to prevent creases/grooves/dimples etc...

You my need to re-lube the case several times to size it down fully. Sometimes I just wipe the partially sized case with my fingers [some lube sticks to your fingers] and reinsert the case to size it a little farther down, then repeat.
