RE: Gain twist.
kurt ,
why do we do anything?
you won't be happy 'till you scratch the itch. just do it.
I went for the 2:1 ratio because the old british match rifles used this.
also I wanted to drive bullets hard for long range, and thought it would give them a gentler start with the slower twist at the breech end.
if you can get a 40 cal, why not try a 40/90 b.n using 45/2.6 brass?
keep safe,
bruce.

Sage advice. I find that if I don't do it now, I definitely will later :-)

Hey Guys when you get to the 3/4 century you start looking for faster production for rifles and barrels Smile

I hear what you are saying, although I'm a spring chicken yet :-). I wonder why gain twist was so popular with the muzzleloaders in the old days, yet Perry says in his book to avoid it.

I think they used it so they could drive a patched ball faster with out blowing the patch. Just a guess.

sometimes you just have to try things. you will love doing snowbank tests with it.
one thing I have found that aids accuracy is that either the front of the bullet or the rear of the bullet takes control of the bullet.
you can see this because the rifling marks in the bullet are wider at one end or the other."

bruce,

I think the paper gets shredded very well with a gain twist because of the "rifling marks in the bullet are wider at one end".

Kurt,

I sent you an email regarding gain twist and Bob Engelbach. Will you be at Lodi over the Mothers Day weekend?

Keep on hav'n fun!

Mike.

I haven't seen anything in the E-Mail.

You bet, I will be at Lodi.
I been spending a lot of time at the rehab getting my strength back and my wind where I can push my gun cart again.
