The beginning of the season

RE: The beginning of the season
Dave R.,

You might also try your .375 H&H bullets w/ a flat meplat on the nose. Clarence on the Shiloh forum made a jig that allowed him to make flat nose bullets by cutting the nose off a little on a table saw. He used these bullets on an Africa hunt, and if memory serves he did quite well w/ them. That should be easy enough to try on your .375 H&H bullets on hand. A meplat of 0.25"-0.30" diam. should make some serious improvements w/o a major weight loss; it should still have plenty of momentum w/ your smokeless loads.

I use flat nose cast bullets almost exclusively in hunting, and DRT or close to it happens fairly often depending on the hit, of course. If they aren't DRT w/ a solid hit the blood trail typically looks like it was applied w/ a paint sprayer from both sides of the animal.

RE: The beginning of the season
Hey Kurt-----------thanks for the follow up--------yup the hollow point is worth further work---the mold is a 4 cavity so its worth testing in a couple of cavities, hope to have the tools worked out by wednesday----i'll try 20 and 30/1 for starters-----i can also run the speed up if necessary.

Hi Ironramrod---------i shoot with Clarence at Yaupon Creek--------and he did use the FP with his Sharps---------------the NOE 375 mold i have has a 0.25 dia flat nose and it did the job, just needing, in some cases, to actually anchor the critter DRT to be sure of recovers, texas cactus thickets can be impenetrable

Good Hunting

RE: The beginning of the season
Well folks seems 30/1 shoots well in the 375 with no leading, so i hollow pointed one cavity of the mold----shoots to the same group are 100 yards so we are ready to do a "terminal ballistics hog test" next weekend at the ranch.

It will be my grandson Calebs first trip to deer camp, hoping to get a couple hogs for a warm up and get him settled in for a nice buck-------------he's deciding which rifle he wants to try--He shoots his Henry 22 lever gun very well-----probably the Ruger #1 22-250 With Noslers-----practice will be tomorrow at the local range-------the Shiloh is going along as well it will be interesting to see what he chooses

Have a safe week and a great Thanksgiving

Dave R.,

I got a question, if you don't mind. How did you go about making a mould cavity hollow point cast bullets? I got a picture in my mind of how it should be done and end up looking, but a description from a pro would likely help me understand completely. It sounds like a lathe job.

BTW I shot another WT deer (DRT) several days ago w/ 1 of my .45/70 LBT flat nose bullets; those things are serious bullets.Big Grin

Hope you have a great hunt w/ your grandson; have fun.

RE: The beginning of the season
hi Ramrod------its a mill job, drilling and reaming the cavity block, setting a 3/16 dowel pin in the Harig grinding fixture and turn grinding the core pin---the core handle is simply a piece of 3/8 cold rolled steel----the core is held in place with set screws-----the handle is just a long 6-32 screw---simple and effective.

i'll replace a section of the mold blocks with hard steel if the bullet performs, so things will stay fit properly-----terminal performance test photo's next week i hope.

Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday

Dave

RE: The beginning of the season
Hi folk's, just got back from the ranch------3 dead hogs, one smelly old boar and two sow's----i'm going to cure the hind quarters off the sows for Christmas ham's Smile-----------the two sow's were dumped under a feeder, first one was DRT---the second got curious fatal error !!!!

The boar was crossing near the blind at about 150 yards-------the hollow point had the same effect DRT------------didn't even twitch

i had hope to improve the performance of the 375 H & H with 270 grain cast HOLLOW points, Paper Patched and find this load is an extremely deadly combination-----DRT literally flattened em where they stood !!!!!!!!!!

Caleb, my youngest daughters Beth's, oldest boy used my 22-250 Ruger #1 with 60 grain Nosler Partitions to collect his first Whitetail Buck

range was 100 yards and he placed the bullet exactly where he was schooled to put the only cartridge he had---------through the heart----the buck bolted and piled up at 20 yards

Caleb had the class assignment to report on the Battle of Coleto where Fannin surrendered, so we went to the battlefield----the Presidio La Bahia---and the Mission-some of the early history of the Texas path to freedom from Mexico
