.38-50 Hepburn

RE: .38-50 Hepburn
I don't shoot at 100 too often but the bottom target don't look to bad to me when most just enlarge the hole.

I was hoping that there was more interest in this caliber that some would post their findings for this .38-50.

I was mainly just testing the fouling control. The 200 yard range is about twice as far as the 100 yard range. I didn’t want to drive all that way just to discover that the brushes weren’t working either but next time I test loads I’ll throw them on at 200 but my next 3 weekends in a row are tied up.

Bruce was a big fan of that cartridge. Too bad he's gone. Maybe a search of his posts will bring up something.

It really put a liking with me so far. When I get to the Quigley I will give it a good try to see how it holds the winds and distance.

Shot at friendship today and it wasn’t good. Was doing kinda sorta ok until turkeys. Only hit 3. Had some pretty stout conditions all day but at turkeys it just fell apart. Next match will

What do you think was the cause Ian? load? or conditions?
I shot yesterday also and the winds were 25-30 mph plus so I just shot 100 yards to finish forming brass and even at 100 yards when I felt the wind hit me harder in the face a few wandered out of the group doubling the size. I never made a sight change just to see what a brisk wind does to this caliber that is new to me. I should have set up on the 200 yard range but I just wanted to blow the final 50 cases out.

I’m sure conditions played into it but it did really well on rams with similar conditions. My set trigger wasn’t working properly on the turkey relay and the regular trigger is pretty heavy so I am hoping that was part of it also. The misses just didn’t make any sense. Just random places and not predictable at all.

Ian, both Woody and I experienced some of those "how did the bullet get to that location" moments yesterday, with our 45's.
It wasn't just the 38's!

Ian, My three CPA's triggers needed fine tuning when I got them. They are a little too fine and the main spring adjustment took care of my problem. The action has a lot of adjustments for fine tuning.
I'm getting familiar with the Hepburn, been shooting it quite a bit but I also get the shot now and then that goes into never ever land now and then. Haven't quite got that worked out yet. It's hard to see this when you print holes at 200 yards that are cutting and then a couple shots wander out and following shots are tight again. Granted I cant get a clean focus that keeps graying out if I look through the scope for more then few seconds or if it's the long freebore this chamber has.
Something I have to get worked out now that the weather is turning better.
I just wish I could get back to using the apertures than the scope. I don't get along using a scope to well, never have.
