Kevin my first rifle was the .40-70. For me it did not take much to get it up and running. The .40-70 at time gets a lot of bad reb that it just wont shoot worth a hoot. I never found it with mine. Mine has a 16 twist with a 34" barrel and it has won me dust collectors in the gong shoots. I been thinking cutting 4" off the barrel to get it down to silhouette weight and use it for that, but all the .40-65 talk of late and I been procrastinating all last summer when I started shooting the silhouette matches I drew up a reamer print and sent it off to Manson to get the reamer for this rifle.
The .40-70 is a good round. Don't give up on it.

I won't give up on it. I got way too much money in the rifle. I have several things to look at concerning my accuracy in this rifle. Like I stated earlier, the brass definitely needs annealed. Since I know nothing about the DZ scope I'm taking it off and gonna just use my Baldwin soule for a bit at 200 yards. That will take possibly several factors out of the mix. Hopefully by the end of the day I'll feel more confident with it.

Ha! I found one accuracy problem while sitting here this morning drinking coffee and looking at the scope. The crosshairs in the DZ scope were way off level. There are some other problem areas I'm sure I'm having with the scope that are probably just my inexperience. Next week I'm headed to Lee Shavers to have him drill and tap my Sharps barrel for scope mounts and will have him help me on the scope set up and how to read the settings.

Kevin the biggest problem using a scope is setting the parallax properly. If the parallax is off even at 100 yards you will get a shotgun pattern instead of a group. If you don't know how to set it on these scoped go a search for scope parallax adjustment.
