RE: Finally

It was really cloudy and dark today. I couldn't see the pig, so I shot at the buffalo at 343 yards. No wind.
Well, my new unfired CPA in 40-70SS didn't shoot too well. It took me 13 shots to even get on the buffalo. Then my pattern was about 24". Just more concerned with barrel break in at this point. Load was 410 grain Saeco 740 with 68 grains of Goex cartridge powder. Jamison new brass.
After that messy group I repainted the buffalo and got out my 45-70 Sharps. Now that's was a different story 19 consecutive hits on the small white plate. Load was 531 grain money bullet sized .458, 68 grains of Swiss 1.5 powder and new Starline annealed brass. Notebook paper under primer. Wiping between each with 2 damp arsenal patches and oil/water solution. Barrel was a Green Mountain 30" #4. Baldwin rear soul. Pedersoli front globe with bubble level. This barrell has only had about 200 rounds thru it so far. It keeps getting better.

RE: Finally
Every bbl is different to what it likes for fouling control.
IMO: Load development is what now needed. The BBL is GTG.

One thing I know is that I should have annealed the new Jamison brass. Some of the brass had the black sooty blow back on them, some didnt. I'm also thinking that fouling control needs improvement. I'll know more today. The 68 grains of cartridge powder was barking pretty well. Almost had a loud crack to it like when you shout a muzzle loader. I was using the DZ scope also for the fist time, and yes after each firing I would pull it back so It would hit the stop.
I also think that with the Sharps 45-70 I could have kept hitting that plate, I just ran out of ammo. The group was 10" wide by 8" tall. I seriously don't think that's too bad. Basically at that yardage that 19 pigs down, Thats a large improvement and I'll take it. The scope will go on the Sharps next week.

I like Cartridge in some cases it's very hard to find a more accurate load, but it almost always gives considerable less velocity.
What twist does your 40-70 have?
1 in 14 twist.
