I shoot an original Sharps 74 Sport. rifle in 4070 SS.
Jamison brass,
64 1/2 grains Swiss 1+ 1/2 very little compression.
PP 330 Brooks custom 397 1 in 20, with 55Y 7 pound to patch to .403
original bore dimensions. Mag primers. very slight crimp to hold PP bullet.

I wet wipe and dry wipe between shots and get
1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards for testing. Fine
All are round groups and all are centered perfectly.

NOW, I tried wiping some SPG on the exposed patch before firing and found the gun wipes swipe much easier. and I think the group is smaller. more testing to come...

does anyone use SPG on their patches?

You don't want anything on those patches that will comprise the paper. Regular bullet lube will tend to soften the paper and likely give you some leading problems.

Ken, Good doin's on your .40/70. Buffalo Arms has their "Rooster Jacket Waterproof Bullet Film Lube" which is meant to be put on the exposed part of the patch. It's a liquid and I put mine on with a Q-tip. This becomes a dry lube so it won't attract dust or grit. You might try that. Shoot sharp, Mike

HI Mike. I gently rolled the patch in SPG just before firing..the group was 1 3/4 inches at 50, and the wet and dry patch after each firing was considerably easier to push through the bore. very little SPG too.
I'm just curious. I'm going to try a felt wad next along with an 060 wad over the powder.

OK..as long as we're talking lube on patches. What is everyone's experience on a 1/8 SPG cookie. bullet, newspaper wad, SPG cookie, .060 walters wad. Loaded and ready to test next week.
How is the accuracy with the cookies??? Ken

Ok. I tried the SPG rolled on the patch before firing yesterday.
good accuracy, the same as with no SPG.
SO. now I'm going to go remove the lead from the barrel.

ken,
you might want to thin the lube with a little oil.
this might vary with the season.
also try a cooking parchment overpowder wad so as to leave more lube in the barrel.
tallow works rubbed on patches, but is no more accurate than plain paper.
keep trying stuff, it is the best way to learn.
