Having an original sporting roller converted from .32 rimfire to 50-70 govt. Twenty-eight inch heavy, 1 in 24 twist, .500 bore & 515 groove, and with a 7 degree leade. I expect paper patch bullets will predominant in my loadings with maybe a few greasers here and there. This rifle has a set trigger and at one time had the Rough and Ready sight so an MVA will have to do (last original I saw sold for around 800 and I thought that was cheap!)

So to get to the point.....is anyone shooting the 50-70 and specifically PPB??? Stephen Borud?????

PS: Am needing an original forend tip for a 1.0 or very slightly larger barrel channel!

That looks like a hefty rifle for sure. You can get the fore-end tip from Treebone Carving. Their casting might be a bit small for your barrel but you can fit it yourself. While that isn't an original part, I doubt that anyone would question that fact after the tip is fitted and casehardened.     One I recently put in my roller is shown as an example. Caprock I am shooting the 50-70 and the 50-100 with paper patch bullets, in fact I have never shot a greaser in any of my 6 Shilohs. I use 70 grains of Fg, .023 card, 3/16" lube, .023 card and I like to seat my bullets for hunting .250 in the case. I shoot a .494 425-450 grain bullet wrapped with 9 lbs onion skin paper. I have a 1-36 twist in both of my 50s so the liter bullets work best. With your twist it will have to be a longer heavier bullet. I know Mr Kurt and Rick shoot faster twist 50s, they can assist you on the bullet options.

It wasn't a misprint but he is willing to make another barrel to my specs. I'm thinking .504 bore; .512 groove. Sound about right?????/

I think the barrels for C. Sharps Arms go with a .502" bore and a .510" groove. I'm not real sure about the bore diameter but the grove is .510". They do not recommend using cast bullets sized over .512", such as with greasers. Shoot sharp, Mike

I personally would not go with a groove deeper then .004" I just went through that with a barrel that had a .00575" deep and it shot great verticals of as much as 15" at 200 yards. A PP bullet will just not fill the grooves enough to hold the gases back to hold an ES. A GG bullet would cast at groove depth but you would never be able to seat it out deep in the bore.
The fouling collection in the bore with that deep groove was a bear. I have seen more original rifles with grooves very shallow then the .004" now used and they worked just fine.
