I've looked for a drawing of this chamber or even just the formed brass and wondering if anyone (like maybe Kurt) has ever seen, developed or found one on the web? I could make a drawing in a graphics package of some sort but I'd like to have a jpeg just to set side by side with a couple other candidates being considered.

If I can't find one I guess I'll try my hand at converting a Powerpoint to a jpeg file. Didn't have much luck last time be seemed like I figured it out a long time ago. Sign me as techno-challenged.

Thanks for giving it a look Kurt. I'd seen enough drawings from you that I thought 'just maybe'.

Perhaps it's considered proprietary and that's why there isn't one floating around cyber sphere.

There are enough dimensions to get pretty close so I'll get back up to speed on my graphics. I know there has to be a way to convert to jpeg - unless it was a dream I had:-)

I had a reamer made up for the .40-72/82 made by Manson to correct a bad factory Browning chamber. Sorry but I lost the drawing with a blue screen crash so I cant give you the dimensions for it. It is almost like the Rhoades .40-82 except it has a 4 degree/1.5 compound lead instead of the 45/3 degree compound lead.
When I dressed up the bad chamber I only had to go slightly deeper then the .40-65 so I don't have to trim the .45-70 brass making it about like a .40-72 but I could make it a .40-82 with out a problem if I wanted to go this rout.
The rifle shoots so well as it is I don't see a reason to go to the 82.

The picture Kurt has provided the link to on the web is the Win 40-82, which is different than the 40-82 silhouette. I have a Lone Star 40-82 which is a 40-65 die run down on a 45-90 case so that the bottom 0.30" is not touched. I think Dave Crossno has a version that is more of a 40-65 on steroids; it has a steady tapper from the base to the bottom of the neck.

I have both the Win 40-82 and the Lone Star Silouette. I like the Silhouette better because it has a longer neck than the Win case.

Mike I have a drawing of a design the Dan T made he called the Rhoades-Dt .40-82 match reamer that was basically a .45-90 case necked down using a .40-65 die that had a cylinder neck .400" long with a .434" case neck wall. Pretty loose for my liking.
There are a lot of different variants floating around for that caliber.
The reamer above was made for the .40-70 Shiloh and also for cleaning the Browning chamber up and I can be used for the .40-82 for a .40-65 chamber for lengthening it out for the 82 on the .45-90 based case.

Kurt, Mike, Thanks for the further replys. I did have a Rhoades drawing... was trying to collect several and stack them up for comparison. Lacked the 40-82 Silhouette but it dawned on me that Tom Myers software might have it and sure enough he had a modified version that I can get dimensions from and make a drawing.

I had a plan for a Ballard parts-gun with a barrel ready for that purpose and was considering the Silhouette for that one. A parts gun wouldn't bother me to chamber in a non-ballard chambering. Plans change!

Today I just took receipt of a Marlin Ballard #5 Pacific in 40-85 Ballard. Spent the evening dismantling and cleaning the bore and chamber. Bore looks very servicable but the chamber looks like someone kept sticking brass and then digging it out so the chamber is gonna have to be cleaned up, especially the recess for the rim. But the chamber walls have some fairly severe gouges running with the chamber direction. I suspect even cleaned up the chamber walls will still leave recesses deep enough to effect extraction. If so, I may have to do recamber this one even though that was not the plan.

I personally like the compound leade with something shallower than the 45 degree transition. Maybe I can cover that ground with Dave Crossno but I imagine he is using the more common 45. But if I'm reading Dutcher right his chamber would be an option.

I have a chamber cast to do as well as a lot of study of options before I rechamber an original Ballard.

John it troubles me that you are so burdened with these decisions. Relieve yourself of all this ever so consuming concern and just send the latest Ballard to me. My life is such that another trouble like this is just a part of life, thus it wouldn't cause any ill effect. Already I have a pretty good idea what would be best and I could get right on it. Normally I wouldn't offer such a benevolent option, but we're friends. Your bride would thank me I'm sure. Regards, Steve.

Here is a drawing of a very rare Ballard Everlasting chamber that is as close as I could get it. I know you are asking for a .40 caliber but I have been shooting this chambered in my CPA 44-1/2. It is a mild recoiling round that is very accurate. I have a second being build that will make silhouette weight. This is strictly a PP chamber and will not except a groove diameter GG bullet, but that can be changed.
The Datum of .5050" is incorrect, it should be .5010" This drawing did not have the Datum updated.

Steve, that's what I always liked about you - I sensed you were a kind and thoughtful man right off. Hope you won’t be too put off if I leave this at home when I come out in August!

Seriously, just left Dave Crossno's place after two and half hours with him. What a guy! Really enjoyed the time and learned a lot about the Ballard Action, namely how tight it should be and means for correcting one that is lose -- not that I've enough experience to make all those changes myself but certainly additions to my understanding. My original plan is looking more naive all the time.

Now, after using his bore scope I think this one will be getting relined. I ‘think’ the bore would shoot albeit not at his competitive level. But the chamber is so rough that I'd have problems just getting to the point of verifying exactly ‘how well’. Fortunately I bought in at a price where a reline won’t hurt so bad.

With this summer’s schedule I can take the Fall to decide on the caliber. I’ll be combing the web for ideas, including the one Kurt offered above. I did have my head set on a 40 caliber and now that I’m targeting this 40-85 I’d like to stay close to the original chambering but like I said, I’m not discounting anything. I WOULD like to travel a path somebody has beaten down already. The plan was for this to be my BP debut so I acknowledge that my notions are suspect - one desire being the departure away from the 45 degree transition to something more tolerant to oversize cast and the novice caster/shooter. That of course coming primarily from my experience with the manufacture of lead rings. Kurt’s compound transition/lead seems attractive to me for those reasons.

Lots to learn before I part with scarce cash.
