Montana 1000

RE: Montana 1000
Me neither Sad, just got home Tuesday, haven't had time to reload.

Good thing we got home when we did. It rained so long and hard here that the sewer system backed up. Lucky us, we have a check-valve and it worked. Many folks were not so fortunate. Still we had a small amount of rain water make it into the basement, enough to soak the carpet in the laundry cellar. I think we have it under control and I can get to work at the loading bench.

We had a great trip, again, and it was super to see so many friends and spend some time with you on the firing line. See you in September if the Good Lord's willing.

Paul.

Please take a little advice from your retired plumber friend.

Sewer back flow preventers are not 100% reliable but you can do something that will help before pulling put like you do for extended time.
If that preventer was installed properly you should have access to the devices cleanout cover in the basement floor or pit. Open the device and make sure that there are no obstructions like solids or paper holding the gate open before leaving home. I have been called to many homes where the device has failed because of this reason.
The only safe sure way to stop backup is installing a gate valve and shut it before leaving home.
But this also can cause a problem with homes with basements with out sump pumps to take care of surface or ground water leaking into the basement to pump the water back outside or water line breaking if it was not shut off before leaving where the floor drain will not be open because the gate valve is closed.

RE: Montana 1000
Kurt,

Good advice my friend. It was installed with an access so I will do that the next time we head out. We do shut off the water and close and drain all toilets now. This happened once before back in 1998 before we owned the house when the area got 8" of rain in four hours. The result was that the whole basement had to be rebuilt including the installation of the back flow valve. We now pay $62 a year for insurance against it happening again.

Anyway, everybody shoot straight at the Montana 1000 yd. match and it's highly likely we'll be there next year.

Wait a minute, am I still in Kansas? How did I get here with the Border closed? Does that make me an illegal alien? If wet-backs come from Mexico does that make me a frozen back? Do I still have insurance? How much is the deductible? I'm confused. HuhHuhTongue
