New guy
Greetings,

was told about you guys over on another board. They prefer their longrifles.. I like them too, but I am also way interested in Mule ear and underhammer guns. Richard said there just might be room for me over here?

I come to gun building by way of a book! When I was 16, the library of my school had a book that's title was something like US military arms 1776-1876.
First page I turned to was an exploded view of a Brown Bess lock.. the next page I flipped to had a picture of the civil war Jenks rifle.. I was done, and had to know all I could about them thingsWink That same year a buddy took me out to fire their CVA longrifle.. I've been hooked on BP guns ever since.

Built my first longrifle following along with the American Pioneer video of Herschle House building one.. then I moved onto making my own Mule ear lock. After some fumbling, I got help from a fellow builder from Woy Woy New South Wales.. the result was my Miss Muley.. My first guns were built using a router and old Craftsman bench top drill press as my only power tools.. those along with a hacksaw, chisels and files.. Added a vintage AA 109 lathe 6X12 and an XX2 mini mill.. along with a few other doodads that make the work easier..

So a bit long winded but there you are.. I offer these as examples of my efforts and welcome any critiques you may offer!!

last gun I finished;

some of the Jenks parts I cut and shaped by hand.. only a drill press, hacksaw and bench sander as my power tools.. the rest was hacksaw, chisel and file work..

top shot a Jenks frame and lever.. hand fit

a lil box framed UH rifle

and Miss Muley

I'll stop boring you and end it there..

Metalshaper, welcome. We discuss most anything of a historical nature, and sometimes get off in the weeds, but it's all in fun and all done politely.
So post your threads, pictures etc. This isn't the busiest place on the net, but it is one where a person can get reasoned and intelligent conversation about shooting the historical weapons we all so admire.

Glad to see that you made it over here good place and you can even ask and talk about underhammers and lots of other stuff and not get kicked of the forum, at least I haven't yet.

About the only way anybody will get kicked off of this forum is for uncalled for rude/biligerent behavior.

Welcome! Tell your friends...

And by the bye, we don't make you use photobucket here. We have tons of disk space for you to store attachments, post them in line, and all that jazz.

Kurt

Welcome Jonathan. Fine work on your rifle and hand gun.
Over the years I been on and off with the front stuffers and the powder cartridge rifles. There is just something about the percussion and flint rifles that keeps drawing me back.
I had a couple under hammers but they kept burning holes in my shirt and jacket sleeves Smile
Lately I have been shooting the flint rifle more than the Sharps again.

RE: New guy
Thanks for the welcome guys!Smile

I'll post the pics next time and look forward to further discussions
on the various guns we all love to build and shoot.

I'm kind of a different in I like a good challenge when I'm building.
Have some parts for a Maynard carbine scratch build down in the shop.
there's a longrifle and a Muley to be built. My version of a Pipher (spl? ) rolling
block style rifle I've roughed parts out for. Still wanna finish my Jenks! then there is the Billinghurst revolver rifle I've been hankerin' to try building? That
and a Furgeson 'type' flinter.. plus a cartridge conversion to a beat up replica C&B revolver I was given.. Good opportunities to "learn as I go!"
