The guy I bought it from had success with the 740 bullet. It would be fun to try a few if you have some to spare.
It strikes me as a good cartridge for a groove size PP bullet. Lots of room to deep seat the bullet.

Jim I have a groove dia bullet and a dual dia bullet.you are welcome to try. the dual dia shot real well in my 13.5 twist borchardt.

Ive also got a brooks gg money bullet that really shot well my 16 twist badger barrel.

I could send you a little care package if you'd like.

Brian,
Thanks!
I would appreciate being able to try your bullets. This is a 16 twist Douglas. I especially curious about the groove diameter bullet. That has worked especially well in my 38-55.

RE: 40 caliber bullets
Kurt & Semtav,
My thanks to both of you for sending the bullets. We have more unseasonably warm weather coming so I’ll be able to test on my two and three hundred yard ranges.
My thank you is a little late because I’ve been buffalo hunting in South Dakota. We got home today and the bullets were in the mailbox.

Kurt,
This rifle seems to show a preference for PP bullets. The ones you sent and the groove sized ones that Brian sent have produced the best groups so far.
What paper did you use on those? They practically fell through the bore and yet shot two very small groups. I was going to re wrap them but thought what the heck, I’ll give them a shot.
Thanks for the help.

RE: 40 caliber bullets
Jim,

I cant say for sure what I used for paper on them. If the paper is .0018" it was 100% cotton Southworth cockle finish.
Those bullets have been sitting on the shelf for several years as well as the GG.
The PP are most likely .001" under bore.
You would be served well with PP at groove diameter if you're willing to reduce the powder load. They shoot very good.
I shot groove diameters in the .45-120/3-1/4".
I'm going to shoot the .40-70 as well as the .40-65 more next season for the midrange and silhouette and up at Merrill and Rapids as well as Alma and Friendship if the two good doctors get my eyes fixed again. Big Grin Closer to home.

Jim,
Stay with a bullet length about 1.325" for best stability in that 16 twist out to 1K
That length has worked well for me out to long range in my 16 twist 40-65.
I could bring you some of my 403380E up to Merrill Feb 10 22 gong match.

Jim,

I have a DDPP for my 16 twist 40-70, I could send you some? What Dia are you looking for? I also have one for dads 40-82 but, that will be to long for your rifle as his is a 14.5 twist.

RE: 40 caliber bullets
Hi Matt,
I just noticed your post. Thanks much for your offer but the 40-82 Crossno is long gone. I sent it off to be re barreled to 45-90 which as my intention when I bought it. However I couldn’t resist the temptation to try it out to see if I’d fall in love with it. I got lots of help from the guys here in the form of bullets to try. I just couldn’t find happiness with what amounted to a big, powder gobbling, mid range cartridge. If I were a silhouette shooter, I may have taken a different view.
Looking forward to your upcoming LR match at Lodi!
Jim
