RE: Everybody's favorite GG bullet?
kurt. thanks for the old catalogue.
have saved it to favourites.
interesting is the alloys recommended for some bullets, 16/1 and even 10/1.
they speak of cleaning after 10 shots for best accuracy, which suggests that they expect you can shoot more without cleaning.
some of the light bullets they suggest the use of light charges of faster powder, and mention no fillers, suggesting that loose powder was used.
no mention of compression at all, just filling the case to the base of the bullet.
the 500 gn govt bullet they recommend out to a max of 800 yds.
keep safe,
bruce.

Use the hard bullets for groove diameter PP or GG and not for the PP at bore or under diameters.

Bruce. When I was a Kid at around 15 maybe with the first .43 rolling block I didn't know anything about reloading. But I had a friend that owned a gun shop that took me under his wing. I guess because I drank his Spike special ( orange juice in a glass full of cream Smile This started when I was about 12 years old. I used to peddle my bike to town with my single shot .22 Winchester over the handle bars on the weekends to buy a 16 cent box of .22 shorts. to shoot with Spike. Spike was to me a very old Man that talked a lot of his grandpa being a Army scout and buffalo hunter. He said I rode on his wagon when I was very small and the stink of those hides was bad. I never knew his real name.
Well he would just scoop the case in a bowl of powder and seat the bullet. No wad. Well I did this for a while but I started to use less powder because that 43 Spanish was hurting my about 80 pound frame so I short loaded the cases using screened out blasting powder that the Farmer I worked for during the summer had in the shed. Well to cut this short, Short loading that case started to get hard extractions were I needed a rod to get the case out of the chamber from the bulge that developed. I have not done this since. I do load rounds with out using a wad sometimes but the bullet base is always in contact with the powder.
Spike got me started loading with the old Lyman tools and I still use the 310 some times

Bruce.

On a side note: The ML target rifle shooters should take note of some of the special Moulds listed. I have several old Ideal mould manuals that list bullets like on page 86 and 99 the two part bullets. They where listed in the older catalog for a hard nosed for hunting and also for over the log guns for target. There is a lot of inside in these old hand books just how they did it shooting repeating rifles using black powder where wiping or blow tubing is not an option.

RE: Everybody's favorite GG bullet?
Robert, most people I know are using Money bullets of one sort or anther. The configuration will depend a bit on the rifles chamber so you can't count on one being the best for all rifles.

I will preface this with saying that I'm a wiper, so requirements are likely a little different. I will say that I have no problem keeping up with the blow tubers though.

In my Shiloh in .45-70 I've recently been playing with the BACO 459535M4 which has minigrooves and two reduced driving bands. It looks like it has excellent potential. Previously I've been using the BACO 459535M1 which has no reduced driving bands. The Saeco 530gr #745 is also a good bullet for the shorter distances.

In my Shiloh .40-65 I use two bullets, the 400gr Saeco #740, and the Kidwell Money bullet which is 400gr, three reduced driving bands, and .409" in diameter. The Saeco bullet is better closer up, but by 500, the Money bullet has the advantage.

I use 16:1 for all of the Money bullets, and 20:1 for the Saeco bullets.

Caliber
Weight
Style
Anything particular to the bullet like reduced first band, etc.

I would like to get a cross section of the bullets currently being used.

Robert,
Looks like your question got hijacked. Most people around here blow tube when shooting black. My favorite for blowtubing was the Lyman Snover bullet for the 40 cal. I had a couple 45 cal moulds that worked ok when blowtubing. A custom Steve Brooks mould was my favorite. But then I went to the microgrooves and blowtubing didn't work very well. As long as you have sufficient grease grooves I don't think it matters about the rest at that range. Now Im Paperpatching, and if I don't want to wipe, I use blackhorn powder.

Sorry about the hijacking. Bad habit of mine, but the no fouling control has a lot of different opinions, you can and you cant.
I will say one more thing on this subject. After posting this I went to the range this morning with my Marlin .45-70 cowboy rifle and some old loads with the Pope bullet (Lyman 121PH ) to get a no wind zero see how much up the notches on the barrel sights will make holes in the cardboard at 100 yards for next years lever gun matches. I just took 20 rounds with 68 gr of 3F OE they where loaded with. I loaded 8 rounds and got the no wind for the 100 yard line and shot a bunch more to get the rear barrel sight elevations and round 18, 19 and twenty cut all three holes for 20 rounds fired. @0 shots should have fouled the throat but I could not feel any difference the way the rifle performed.
It would be interesting to shoot with using a tang sight.

There I'm done hijacking Smile .......Kurt

RE: Everybody's favorite GG bullet?
I don't think the thread was hijacked at all. Fouling control is a big part of the equation in being successful. It's not a I use this or that answer.
Many folks blame all manner of things from the wind to missing the last episode of Judge Judy when their shots start going high or low towards the end of a string, but most of the time it can be trace to fouling control failing creating erratic pressures and velocity. Wiping can be done just as quickly as blow tubing, and has proven time after time to be what the folks that get the big trophy's at the match do.
But if we are worried about staying "on topic" the op's question was in reference to bpcr shooting, per the rules of the NRA bpcr and both matches, the only allowable powder at this time is either factory produced black powder or pyrodex....

even if kurt hijacks a thread, it is always worth reading what he says.
everyone's mileage is different, but you will always pull something out of what he says.

RE: Everybody's favorite GG bullet?
Well guys I guess I am at fault for Robert L's post. He told me he ordered a Hoch bullet mould that he changed the dimensions on and I told him that what worked 15 years ago is not what current BPCR shooters use. It's a 550 grain bullet with the first band at .456 for a 45/70 Browning.I shoot Brooks Creedmoor with the first band at .450 and a Money bullet from Boomer., Bill
