Mixing Alloy
Fell into a deal, have a bunch of bags of Western 7 1/2 chilled shot.
Now need to figure out how much tin to add.
Thinking 1 lb of tin per 20 lb pot full of shot?

RE: Mixing Alloy
I think that would be a good starting point. Check the hardness, cast up a bunch and shoot them. Adjust accordingly. I do not know how much antimony is in the mix.

RE: Mixing Alloy
Supposedly with this chilled shot it's 2% antimony.. Guess I'll order about 10 lbs of tin and see what happens.

Don, that 1# tin/20# of shot just may a bit to hard, but a test will tell. Do you have a hardness tester?

Good buy on the shot though!
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

RE: Mixing Alloy
Jim I don't have a hardness tester. Guess I'll mix a batch up when the tin gets here, and then see what the bullets are like. I've been shooting mostly 16-1 as of late.

RE: Mixing Alloy
Yup,

I also like 16:1, but not more/less than 20:1 for target work. For a hunting bullet, I think it doesn't matter much, 'cause a .45 caliber hole thru flesh is a .45 caliber hole LOL!

I looked at them and Midway. Got the tin coming from BACO for a touch under 16$.
